The Reflection of a Speaking and Listening Course

I gave a Speaking and Listening Course about the first period of Unit 7, Book 3 of People’s Education Press in Caihong Middle School on November 13th,2017. Without Ms. Liu’s patient guidance, I couldn’t have finished it successfully. From the very beginning to the end, I benefitted a lot, which made me so excited. As Ms. Liu said there are no perfect lessons, but the better lessons. Here I’d like to make a list of my reflections.

Strong points:

First, teach fully in English. Although most of my students are not very good at English, I tried my best to speak English during the whole class. Mr. Yi Renrong once said we English teacher should make our English class modern and the way to success is to use “Three Languages”,which are simple language, body language and supporting language. What made me the happiest was that I made it. I found that all my students tried to listen to me carefully and they would look around to check what I asked them to do when they couldn’t follow me. I’m sure they will understand most of what I say in English class one day.

Second, wonderful videos made the whole class lively. The videos could stimulate students’ interest in learning English, meantime they could also motivate students’ imagination. The video about a cute robot which is cleaning the desk played a good role in leading in my new lesson. After showing it, I wrote the title, “Unit 7 Will people have robots?”, on the blackboard. Then I played another video which was made by my foreign friend, Bob. He recorded something interesting and the key and difficult points of this lesson were involved in it. He asked all my students to write an e-mail to him, and students could own the ability to make it after taking this lesson. The third video was about future life. Students could be interested in talking about future life after watching it.

Third, colorful class activities made the class passionate. We had individual work, drill work, pair work, group work and whole class work. All my students could get the opportunities to express themselves and their listening and speaking abilities could be improved of course.

Fourth, cooperation work made the teaching effective. Through cooperation, even the poorest students could catch up with what I taught. They could get the help from their group members, and students from all levels could complete their tasks at last.

Last, fully participation made all the students active. I divided students into two groups to practice the dialogues, thus each of them had to open their mouths in class.

Weak points:

First, I should speak English as fluently as I could. Because some of my students are poor in listening, I had to repeat my words again and again, which made my oral English sound a little less fluent.

Second, I should make full use of the spider-gram. I tried to show the key sentences of this lesson through a spider-gram, but I failed to use it after writing it on the blackboard.

Last, I shouldn’t ask the students to read after me while they were learning the new sentences. Actually, they could try to speak first and then I gave them help when necessary.

It took me nearly two months to design this lesson. Although it had some weak points, I really updated my ideas in Listening and Speaking Course. I strongly believe that students are expected to speak and listen before they learn to read and write. I found I’ve made a little progress and

I ’m sure I’ll be better and better and my class will be more and more charming one day.
