The Tree on the Edge of a Cliff
Placed there by some erratic blasts,
The tree at the end of the plain,
On the edge of a cliff
Overlooking the canyon,
Hearkens to the clamor from the distant forest
And the chanting of a stream in the valley.
Out there in solitude it stands,
At once forlorn and refractory,
A remnant of the contours of the gales –
Its contorted body.
It seems to position itself –
For an imminent plunge down the abyss,
Or an aspiring soar on widespread wings. Translator’s Note: This poem depicts the ordeal and character of Chinese intellectuals in the tumultuous decades after 1949.
