Alas, my time with the Jilin group has come and gone… much too quickly. I wanted to thank the teachers for their outstanding work, the group leader for her commitment and passion, and the students for their resilience and open minds. Here is a brief breakdown of the highlights of each day with the student。

Day #1: I met the students in the morning for a presentation at the University of Toronto, after being stuck in an airport for 6 hours the previous night, and having only slept 3 hours. Regardless of my fatigue, I quickly sprung to life, once I saw the eager faces of the students. After concluding the presentation about Canadian Education at UofT, we provided the students with an opportunity to ask questions, and I was amazed to hear so many questions! Traditionally, I find Chinese students to be extremely shy, but this group was not, which would help them better immerse in Canadian culture and learn English Language skills. We had a delicious Western lunch at Victory College. This was followed by viewing the city of Toronto from 153 stories in the air at the CN Tower, and a cool underwater expedition through Ripleas Aquarium. Our first day was complete, and I knew this was a special group of students.

Day #2: Off to Niagara Falls… A beautiful natural wonder of the world. While we were driving, I delivered a mini lesson in English and engaged every single student to speak English with me through discussions and games. While standing on a boat under the waterfalls, I had great conversations with some students, Michael and Howard, who were eager to improve their English language skills. After spending 5 years of my life studying at the University of Waterloo, I felt very fortunate to share this special campus with the students. We observed classrooms, the Student Life Center, the Library and Ontario geese! The children were fascinated and so well behaved.

Day #3: As we drove 3 hours to Kingston, the students and I again engaged in English Language discussions and games. Today, they were much more lively and not afraid to participate. I taught them what appropriate behaviour is when meeting a stranger, and challenged them to take a photo with a stranger today, something that would put many students completely out of their comfort zone. I was extremely impressed to see many of the students return to the bus with photos they had taken with complete strangers. They demonstrated such courage and bravery! One student took pictures with 5 different strangers. At lunch, I showed some students how to use a knife and fork, and they displayed good manners at the dinner table. Following lunch, the 1000 island cruise was a success.

Day #4: What an extremely busy day. We started off with a tour of Parliament Hill, the site that houses the Canadian political parties. During a tour in English, the children were very attentive, polite and fascinated. After the tour, we visited the Canadian War Museum. The children seemed delighted to see the artifacts, artillery and learn about Canadian war and the repercussions of war. Some students were able to connect what they had learned while visiting other destinations, with the battles that shaped the nation of Canada. I taught some students how to play traditional Canadian card games, which led to many laughs. After a quick tour of McGill University, it was time for me to say goodbye. I was truly honoured when the entire Jilin group presented me with a gift, an incredible card, and a very sincere speech. It was an emotional exit, and one I will never forget!

The teachers and group leader did an absolutely amazing job leading and managing the students. At no point in my time with the students in Canada did I ever feel like they were miss behaving or that we were not safe.

I have made many friends who I value greatly and hope to see again. I really appreciate and will never forget all of the time I spent with the students and teachers. Who knows, perhaps I will visit them in China one day or they will return to Canada!
