His death was confirmed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, who announced: “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.”</p> <p class="ql-block">Cardinal Farrell praised Pope Francis for a life devoted entirely to serving God and the Church. “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized,” Farrell said. “With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God.”</p> <p class="ql-block">Francis, the first Jesuit and the first Latin American pope, served as head of the Catholic Church for 12 years. He was known for his humility, his deep concern for the poor, and his progressive approach to Church leadership.</p> <p class="ql-block">His health had been declining for several years. Francis suffered from chronic lung problems and had part of one lung removed at age 21. In February, he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital with a severe respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He remained hospitalized for 38 days, marking his longest stay during his papacy.</p><p class="ql-block">Despite his illness, Pope Francis continued to lead as much as possible. He presided over key events in early February and even appeared in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, blessing thousands and taking a brief ride in the popemobile.
