Francis suffered from chronic lung problems and had part of one lung removed at age 21. In February, he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital with a severe respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He remained hospitalized for 38 days, marking his longest stay during his papacy.</p><p class="ql-block">Despite his illness, Pope Francis continued to lead as much as possible. He presided over key events in early February and even appeared in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, blessing thousands and taking a brief ride in the popemobile.
