11km Lake Mackenzie to Routeburn Fall Lodge

Today was Monday, January 13, 2025, and it was the fifth day of our six-day hike. This was the view from our bedroom at 7:22 AM. At the top of the mountain, the glacier is snowy and icy. Even though it’s summer, there is always snow at the summit.

This was the dining room and lounge in the Mickanzi Lodge, where we were having our breakfast. We enjoyed tea, coffee, and you can also see our sandwich lunch bags, packed and ready to go.

The young girl in pink clothes is Edie. She is 21 years old and will be studying Biomedical Science in Germany next semester. She has been carrying some of my gear for me every day.

To become a tourist hiking guide, the very first criteria is to hold a First Aid Certificate, ensuring they have the skills to deal with any injuries.

My three toenails were bruised and turned purple, and according to Matt, they will eventually drop off. They were injured by the impact of my toes against my shoes.

In the lounge room, Georgia was fixing my toes before we headed out, while Lindsey was tending to Wendy's toes, and Nik was repairing Alice's shoes, which needed to be taped up because they had already started to fall apart.

At 9:18 AM, we gathered everything and headed to Lake Mackenzie for a group photo. After that, we continued along the track past Lake Mackenzie.

We put on our backpacks and headed to Routeburn Falls Lodge.

We reached Fiordland National Park.

At 10:03 AM, Scott called, "Wei, come have a look." Wow! 🫢🫢 I stopped and looked the view was below us as we were climbing up, so I looked down, the outstanding view was right in front of me.

I had been focused on the track, constantly checking where my feet should go and figuring out if I needed to jump. I had to decide whether to set down and slip, and which tree branch or patch of grass to hold onto for support. I concentrated fully on the track, giving it 100% of my attention unless Scott called out,

“It's time for a water 💦 break."

"Wei, have a look."

"Listen," he said.

I listened carefully to the birds singing. Some sounds I couldn't hear, but Scott could. He has much better hearing than I do. For example, one type of bird 🦅 made high-decibel sounds that Scott could hear, but I couldn't.

"Scott, do you have any weaknesses?" I asked him.

"I don't have any weaknesses," Scott answered spontaneously.

Scott has full self-confidence in everything he does.

We arrived at the top of Fiorldland National Park.

At 11:25 AM, on this part of the track, one side was the mountain, and the other side was a steep cliff that made me dizzy when I looked at it. I needed to hold onto the rail while passing, avoiding looking down.

At 2:02 PM, we arrived at our lunch hut, where we could enjoy a hot drink, which made a big difference after our tough journey.

I attended Ultimate Hikes, a company that has been in existence for 30 years. They covered all the details of the 6-day trek to ensure our comfort and enjoyment while also designing a challenging program for us to complete, which included 66 km, plus an additional 9 km. They did not count Day 3 as a rest day, so everyone hiked that day. According to Nik, this track was the hardest compared to others in the region.

We completed an 11 km journey from Lake Mackenzie to Routeburn Falls Lodge, and this was our bedroom—number 5—shared by Bec, Debbie, and me.

At 6:23 PM, Lindsey gave us a briefing about the sixth day ahead. Following that, we enjoyed a three-course dinner 🥘 at three tables, each including our guide. This was the first and last time our guide dined with us. Our guide, Nik, sat at our table with Scott, Jec, Matt, Bec, and me.

After dinner, we all sat in the lounge room having a chat. Julian, Debbie, Scott, and I formed one group. Julian encouraged me to speak freely with anyone and used the word "Fail" to remind everyone that learning involves making mistakes. I’d like to share what he said with you:

Scott is the CTO of a 15,000-employee company in Philadelphia, USA. If he believes that imperfect communication is acceptable, then it’s alright for all of us to speak and learn English.

CTO stands for Chief Technology Officer.

The CTO is responsible for overseeing the technological direction of a company, making decisions about technology investments, and ensuring that the technology strategy aligns with the business goals.

We talked about schools, educating kids 👧, our extreme tolerance, and the tremendous efforts we put into our work. After work, we often collapsed at home…

Time was cruel, quietly approaching 10:00 PM. We had to say good night 😴; otherwise, we could have talked in the dark until the cows came home.🏠 😊🤔😊
