Presented by The Chinese Association of Science, Education and Culture of South Florida (CASEC) Join CASEC's Dr. Renliang Xu as he highlights the rich heritage and unique sounds of traditional Chinese music made possible by instruments such as the Er Hu and Gu Zheng. Dr. Xu will also play a few of the instruments for our listening pleasure. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with these instruments as part of the Instrument Petting Zoo. The Er Hu, a two-stringed bowed instrument, has been a cornerstone of Chinese music for centuries. Its soulful and deep tones are renowned for conveying profound emotions, captivating audiences with its expressive melodies. Despite having only two strings, the Er Hu produces a remarkably rich and complex sound that leaves listeners in awe. The Gu Zheng, a traditional Chinese zither, adds another layer of musical depth to the performance. With its 21 to 26 strings, the Gu Zheng creates a wide range of tones, from delicate and ethereal to powerful and resonant. This instrument’s versatility and beauty make it a favorite in both solo and ensemble settings. Dr. Renliang Xu holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry and is retired from the scientific instrument industry. He loves Chinese folk music, is an amateur instrument player, and a proud 33 year resident of Broward County! In conjunction with this musical journey, we invite you to participate in the NEA Big Read, a program designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. This year, the entire county is encouraged to read “To Live” by Yu Hua. This poignant novel tells the story of a man’s transformation from the spoiled son of a rich landlord to an honorable and kindhearted peasant as he and his family endure the ravages of war and starvation. Join us for an unforgettable experience that combines the timeless beauty of traditional Chinese music with the powerful narrative of “To Live.” Whether you’re a music enthusiast, a book lover, or simply curious about Chinese culture, this program promises to be a mesmerizing experience that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the artistry and history of traditional Chinese music and literature.
