Heiwa looked at the brush and took off the cap. The purple-red tip reminded him of the fiery red fur of a fox. He couldn't remember how many times he had run into foxes while mowing the grass on the hillside. One time, he suddenly swung the sickle in his hand and happened to catch the fox's hind leg. The fox had a thick, fluffy tail like a flame. He chased it desperately, but watched it run away from a narrow crack in the cliff. He was always thinking about whether the fox's lame leg had healed. Now, he suddenly thought of how many brushes he could plant if he caught the fox! His left hand was stained with the green juice of the grass, and the tips of his fingers turned purple and black. He always felt timid when holding the smooth pen and the soft yellow imitation paper. Mr. Xu came in and led the students to study. Heiwa didn't have a book, so he just watched Mr. Xu recite in a daze: "When... people... are... born, their nature... is... good."

The students in the school were all from the village. There was no strangeness among the classmates, only the novelty of studying. After three or five days, as the novelty disappeared, Heiwa felt that studying was no longer a blessing but a living torture. His mother would ring the alarm bell to him almost every night: "Heiwa, if you don't study hard and just play around, not to mention letting you and your mother down, your uncle Bai's kindness will be..." Heiwa said impatiently: "Just ask me to cut grass."

The friendships that were established in the village during the days of mowing grass and chopping wood, floating on the water, and collecting sparrow eggs soon reappeared in the school, and the children naturally gathered around the monkey king Heiwa. Heiwa no longer had any interest in this kind of worship and had lost confidence, because he also began to worship another person, that is Lu Zhaopeng. Lu Zhaopeng was transferred back to the village school from Shenhe Village. He was not the oldest, but he was the most educated. Mr. Xu called him to his dormitory for a one-on-one class, and he was already teaching "The Doctrine of the Mean". He was very easy-going, with a pair of deep eyes covered with very long and black eyelashes, which made people feel close. His younger brother Lu Zhaohai also had such deep eyes and long eyelashes. His father Lu Zilin and his grandfather Lu Taihuan both had such long faces, deep eye sockets and long eyelashes. Lu Zhaopeng studied in Shenhe Village since he was a child, and Heiwa rarely came into contact with him. Now sitting in front of the two adjacent square tables, he could not get rid of the charm overflowing from his deep eye sockets.

Heiwa couldn't help but compare the brothers Lu Zhaopeng and Bai Xiaowen in his mind. The brothers Lu Zhaopeng and Lu Zhaohai made him feel kind, and even their father Lu Zilin made him feel kind. Lu Zilin often grabbed the hair on Heiwa's head in the streets and alleys, and grabbed the thing in his crotch with his other hand, laughing and forcing him to call him uncle: "Heiwa, you little boy, do you want to call me uncle? I'll pull out your broken cow and feed it to the cats!" Uncle Bai Jiaxuan always had a solemn and serious expression, and his bulging eyelids always reminded people of the statues in the temple. Heiwa knew that the Bai family was good to him, but he was always afraid. He cut two baskets of grass every morning and afternoon, hurriedly carried them to his own stable, poured them next to the chopping block, and hurried away, always afraid of seeing Bai Jiaxuan's face that looked like a statue. He sat at the square table of the Bai brothers, looking at the faces of Xiaowen and Xiaowu, he thought of the face of the little prodigy next to the statue in the temple, with a serious look as if he was always ready to accept others' worship.

Xiaowen and Xiaowu studied and imitated very hard, and they were also very smart. They recited fluently without stuttering, and Mr. Xu drew red circles on the large characters he copied from the shadow grid. Heiwa had already taken an elegant academic name, Lu Zhaoqian, which was given by his father at the request of Bai Jiaxuan. His father said that the boy was wild and naughty, and asked him to change it. Bai Jiaxuan said: "He has developed a humble character, so he is not wild or naughty. He is a humble gentleman! He belongs to the Zhao generation in the Lu family, so he can be called Zhaoqian, which is also easy to call!" When Mr. Xu called Lu Zhaoqian to recite, Heiwa did not respond at all, which made the other children laugh. The students still called him Heiwa, and Zhaopeng also called him Heiwa. Only Xiaowen and Xiaowu remembered the name given by his father, and they always called him Zhaoqian. Every time he heard Xiaowen and Xiaowu call Zhaoqian, Heiwa felt that he had more respect for the Bai brothers, just as he was afraid of Bai Jiaxuan but still respected him. He finally couldn't stand the loneliness at the square table of the Bai brothers, so he moved his own stool to the square table of the Lu brothers.

‍ Chen Zhongshi (August 3, 1942 - April 29, 2016), a native of Baqiao, Shaanxi Province, is a contemporary writer from mainland China.
