Smith ScD, FREng</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block">We are sad to announce the sudden death of Roderick Smith of Oxford on 26th December 2024, his 77th birthday. He died in a tragic accident whilst descending from Grisedale Tarn after an enjoyable family walk in his much loved Lake District.</p><p class="ql-block"> Beloved husband of Yayoi (Yamanoi), loving brother of Janet Thompson, dear uncle to Adam Whitehead and Annabel Bunce. He will be greatly missed by his extended family in the UK and Japan.</p><p class="ql-block"> He had a long and distinguished academic career at Oxford, Cambridge, Sheffield and Imperial College. He was Past President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department of Transport. During his period as a Trustee of the Science Museum, he was instrumental in bringing a Japanese Bullet train to the National Railway Museum in York. He loved the mountains, climbing all the Lakeland Wainwrights and had led expeditions to Greenland, Arctic Norway, the Himalayas and the Karakoram. He was a proud member of the Fell and Rock Club, the Alpine Club, the Arctic Club and the Yorkshire Ramblers' Club.</p><p class="ql-block"> There will be a private funeral at St John's College, Oxford and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date.</p><p class="ql-block">The family record their very grateful thanks to all the Mountain Rescue teams and the Emergency Services.</p><p class="ql-block">All Inquiries to : C.S.
