A Baby Running Barefoot

When the bare feet of the baby beat across the grass

The little white feet nod like white flowers in the wind,

They poise and run like ripples lapping across the water;

And the sight of their white play among the grass

Is like a little robin’s song, winsome,

Or as two white butterflies settle in the cup of one flower

For a moment, then away with a flutter of wings.

I long for the baby to wander hither to me

Like a wind-shadow wandering over the water,

So that she can stand on my knee

With her little bare feet in my hands,

Cool like syringa buds,

Firm and silken-like pink young peony flowers.

David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) is an English writer. His prolific and diverse output included novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, paintings, translations, and literary criticism. His poems often embrace objects in nature to capture emotions

through free verse.

It is a free verse. This naturalistic structure reflects the free and untrammeled nature of the baby's feet. They are moving to and fro, unconstrained by strict meter or form. It takes us to the innocent world of a baby， enjoying the company of grass, and flowers in nature.

奔跑的小小光脚丫

一双小孩儿的光脚丫奔跑着穿过草地，

白皙的脚丫，像在微风里频频点头的白色花朵，

停顿一下，再跑起来，好像拍打在水面荡起圈圈涟漪，

白昕的小脚丫在草丛里玩耍的情景，

像小罗宾鸟歌唱那么可爱，

或许，像两只白蝴蝶歇息在一朵花蕊里。

不一会，它们扑闪翅膀飞走。

多么渴望小孩儿漫步朝我走来，

像风的影子飘过水面，

站立在我的膝上，

我用双手托住她的光脚丫，

凉凉的犹如丁香花蕾，

饱满光滑如丝 ，犹如初绽的粉色牡丹。

大卫 赫伯特 劳伦斯 （1885-1930），英国诗人。劳伦斯作品颇为丰盛，并涉猎其他文学领域，诸如小说，短篇小说，戏剧，杂文，图画艺术，翻译，和文艺批评。他的诗作品常运用自由体裁, 利用自然界生物来表现情感。

一首自由体诗，没有韵律或诗体控制。诗的自然结构显现小孩子的自由自在， 未有约束的小脚丫在奔跑。 诗句把读者带进一个幼小孩子的纯真世界，享受大自然里的花草。
