加州大学申请之八：茴香豆只有一种写法

申请美国大学，文书Essay必不可少。虽然这些主文书与补充文书多是私立大学所要求，但是，一些公立大学或者公立大学的honor program也是需要的。加州国大学，这个申请文书自然也不例外，而且特立独行。
目前加州大学申请系统对于申请文书，采用八选四，也就是从八篇Essay中选出四篇，并美其名曰：Personal Insight Questions。现在都流行AI，我就请大火的ChatGPT回答了一下，什么是Personal Insight Questions：
关于申请文书，加州大学这样开宗明义：想象一下，UC加州大学就是一个人，如果你和她面对面，你想让她如何知道你？申请文书给你一个机会！至于这八个问题，没有前后之分，没有重要与不重要之分，答案也没有对错之分，你可以任意选择四个，分别回答，每个问题限制在350个字以内。但是，UC加州大学系统也建议：选择那些与你的经历最相关，最能反映出你个人特质的那些问题来回答。
这八个问题具体如下：
1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.
2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.
7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?


人生有三观，哲学有三问。你仔细看看这八个问题，说到底，也是三问：你是什么样的人？你为将来学业做了那些准备？你高中期间做过什么事情？这三问可以画做三个同心圆：本我，小我，大我。本我：我是什么人？小我：我将来想干什么，我为之做过什么；大我：我，作为一个社会人，在学校与社区做过什么活动？
这三问融入在八个问题当中，让你show and share而不是tell出来。如何写好这四个问题，UC加州大学系统官网也做了特别说明，建议孩子与家长仔细阅读每个问题下面的说明！仔细阅读，仔细阅读，仔细阅读，重要的事情说三遍。只有仔细阅读并理解了，回答这些问题才会有的放矢。
至于究竟怎么写，每个孩子不一样，生活的环境不一样，角度不一样，很难有统一的格式与写作风格。但是有几点需要特别提醒注意的：
不要写成流水账。UC加州大学官网也针对这一点特别指出：Making a list of accomplishments, activities, awards or work will lessen the impact of your words. Expand on a topic by using specific, concrete examples to support the points you want to make.
用第一人称：我。这个UC加州大学官网也写明：Use “I“ statements。Talk about yourself so that we can get to know your personality, talents, accomplishments and potential for success on a UC campus.
不需要华丽的词语，优美的文笔。要知道，与那些私立名校的多数AO们出身不同，要求也不同，加州大学AO们不会去喝着咖啡，探讨人间大爱，诗和远方。他们就像钢铁直男，不想去猜你肚子里的蛔虫，没有时间与精力去看茴香豆的茴有几种写法。如果说他们喜欢什么样的essay，我简言之：单刀直入，骨头带肉。具体来说，就是针对问题，做直接回答，别来那些弯弯绕。回答问题时，要用具体的、精确的例子支持自己的观点与看法。如果能做到这一点，你的essay肯定过关了！
