Fishing for the moon

子曰

Once upon a time, there was a little monkey playing by a well. He peered into the well and saw a reflection of the moon in its waters. The little monkey cried out, "Oh no, oh no! The moon has fallen into the well!"

Upon hearing this, a bigger monkey rushed over, took a look, and exclaimed, "Oh no, oh no! The moon has fallen into the well!"

Then an older monkey arrived at the scene, also taking a look into the well and joining in the chorus, "Oh no, oh no! The moon has fallen into the well!"

Word of the moon's supposed fall spread quickly, and other monkeys from nearby rushed to see. Together, they all cried out, "Oh no, oh no! The moon has fallen into the well! Let's hurry and retrieve it!"

The monkeys climbed up the large tree next to the well. The old monkey hung upside down, gripping the feet of the bigger monkey, who was also hanging upside down and holding onto another monkey's feet. This chain of monkeys continued, with each monkey holding onto the next, until they reached down into the well, and the little monkey dangled at the very bottom.

The little monkey reached out to grab the moon. As his hand touched the water, the moon's reflection disappeared.

The old monkey raised his head and saw that the moon was still shining brightly in the sky. He caught his breath and said, "No need to fetch it, no need to fetch it. The moon is perfectly hanging up in the sky!"

And so, the monkeys realized their folly and understood that the moon was never in the well to begin with. They had worked together in a chain to "retrieve" the moon, only to realize that it had always been in its rightful place in the heavens. The lesson of the story is that sometimes things are not as they seem, and it's important to have a clear perspective before taking action.
