三十幅，共一轂，當其無，有車之用。

埏埴以爲器，當其無，有器之用。

鑿户牖以為室，當其無，有室之用。

故有之以為利，無之以爲用。

通行本(简)：

三十幅，共一毂，当其无，有车之用。

埏埴以为器，当其无，有器之用。

凿户牖以为室，当其无，有室之用。

故有之以为利，无之以为用。

白话文解释：

三十条辐集中到毂，毂中空无，才有车的作用。

揉陶泥为器，器中空无，才有器的作用。

开凿门窗造房，在壁上开凿空无，才有房的作用。

所以，“有”只给便利，“无”才起作用。

英文翻译：

Tools

Thirty spokes meet at a nave;

Because of the hole we may use the wheel.

Clay is moulded into a vessel;

Because of the hollow we may use the cup.

Walls are built around a hearth;

Because of the doors we may use the house.

Thus tools come from what exists,

But use from what does not.

马王堆帛书本(繁)：

卅［木＋畐］（同幅，甲本句殘）同一轂，當其无，有車之用也。燃（埏shan1）埴（zhi2）而為器，當其无，有埴器之用也。

鑿户牖，當其无，有室之用也。

故有之以為利，无之以為用。
