Paul Russel had a distant relative, an 82-year-old, who was going through the late stages of Alzheimer’s. This, unfortunately, rendered him unable to care for himself, so the family decided to move him closer where they could keep a watchful eye over him. The relative had a pet in his old home that couldn’t come with him, so Paul took matters into his own hands and decided to fetch the pet.

Paul’s generosity was boundless. He felt the need to help his relative by making the transition easier. Paul helped him get situated in the nursing home, but the attendants there said that pets weren’t allowed. This was an understandable rule, but this also meant Siam, the relative’s pet cat, had nowhere to go.

Paul and his wife, Jill, decided to extend a helping hand, once again, and take Siam in. After all, they already had a couple of cats; one more wouldn’t hurt.

The walls were full of scratches. He assumed that perhaps Siam needed a way to tend to its claws, but the sight of the scratch marks still left him in shock. There was a possibility that a rabid animal might have set up a nest or den inside the abandoned home; there was no way to tell for sure.

With the electricity shut off, the blinds drawn, and the boxes upon boxes blocking his vision, he decided to make the best out of a creepy situation and continue to search. He called out for Siam to come to him, but as any cat-lover knows, calling a cat by name isn’t enough.

After minutes of calling out the cat’s name without a response, Paul wasn’t sure what to do. Then, he thought that he could probably temp Siam out with a bowl of cat food. He first had to find a bowl and hope that there was extra food laying around.

Although the plan was genius, it was a lot harder to execute since he wasn’t familiar with the layout of the home, and there was no light to guide him, save for the tiny beam from the flashlight. He eventually found a bowl and food and set up the ‘trap,’ but alas, to no avail.

Stunned to immobility, Paul didn’t know what to expect. Best case scenario, this was Siam calling for help from some unknown room. Worse case scenario, well, Paul didn’t want to think of that, so he ventured from room to room looking for the source of the shrill cries.

By following the cries, he found himself standing in front of the bathroom door. Nothing good comes from the bathroom of an abandoned home, but Paul couldn’t leave empty handed. He gently pushed the bathroom door open with his foot, shined his flashlight in all directions, and eventually found an unmoving Siam in the bathtub. Only God knows how long Siam had gone unfed.

Paul had finally found what he was looking for. With a sigh of relief, he picked Siam up ever-so gently and began retracing his steps back to the front door and to his car. His plan was to take Siam to the vet to save the malnourished kitten, but then he heard another sound—this time coming from the bedroom.

He thought that maybe a racoon had busted into the home, got injured, and had set up a nest in one of the rooms. This might have explained why Siam was hiding in the bathroom. Still, his curiosity got the best of him and he resumed his search by following the cries of an unknown creature. His search brought him to the bedroom where, after opening the door, a mysterious, matted-fur creature burst forth from under the bed and went scattering to the cellar.

The normal reaction of any person in this situation would to exit the home and drive away. Paul did just that—while carrying Siam in his arms, he made a beeline for the front door and ran straight to his car. Jill was surprised to see the look on her husband’s face. They had completed the mission and now, could leave the premises.

Thankfully, Siam was alright; slightly malnourished and dehydrated, but Siam would make a full recovery. Though thankful for the happy news, Paul felt that he needed to seek the monster out, much to the dismay of Jill. After going back and forth for a bit, Paul decided he’d go into the old home once more, and Jill decided to go with.

This time, Paul went with guns blazing, or rather with a flashlight and a makeshift trap. He and Jill entered the home once more, headed straight for the cellar, and set the trap up. They were hoping to capture the mysterious creature and evacuate it from his relative’s household.

In Paul’s retelling of his story, he notes that this part was like a “horror movie.” While scanning the cellar with their flashlights, Paul noticed something in the corner. It wasn’t moving, but it was definitely the something he was looking for. Upon close inspection, he saw that the mystery creature with several indistinguishable limbs protruding from its underside.

Paul wasn’t sure what he was looking at, and Jill was at a complete loss for words. However, they weren’t going to leave the creature there, even if they weren’t sure what it was. So, the pair gently coaxed it out of its hiding spot, and it obligingly approached their waiting hands.

Not knowing what they were looking at, they decided to take the ‘monster’ to the vet. Even the trained medical staff weren’t sure what the ball of disheveled fur was. That is, until they rolled it around and discovered that a pair of eyes undoubtedly belonging to a feline. They gave it a quick buzz, sheering pounds and pounds of matted fur. Lo and behold, the mystery animal that haunted the abandoned home of the senior relative was, indeed, a kitty.

Paul and Jill weren’t sure what to do next. They had several pets at home, and they just took in Siam. They asked the vet what options there were, and they admitted that the only humane thing to do was put the newly found cat to sleep. Odds were slim that somebody was going to adopt a dirty cat, especially one with ‘tentacles’ of matted fur hanging from its body.

What a sad ending for a poor cat. Nobody could tell how long the cat was hiding the home or when it had last eaten, and now their only option was to let the vets put it to sleep. However, there was something they could do—they could adopt the cat. And without hesitating for even a second, that’s exactly what the couple did.

Paul didn’t have to take a second to think about whether adopting a new cat was the right move. He also knew the perfect name for their new cat. Hidey, names for its natural inclination to hide when Paul was around. After Hidey was done getting groomed, the couple took it home and introduced it to its new family.

Not long after the whole ordeal of searching for Siam and Hidey, Paul visited his relative who was just moved into a nursing home. They talked for a few minutes about Siam and how to care for it, then Paul brought up Hidey. At first, the relative wasn’t sure what Paul was referring to, and then it clicked. Hidey was his pet! He just forgot that he had it!

Because of the relative’s deteriorating mental health, Hidey had completely slipped his mind. He didn’t even have a name for that, not knowing whether it was never named or if he had forgotten it. Apparently, Hidey had been living off of scrapes from the growing heap of garbage. The scraps contained fattening foods which caused Hidey to become obese and unable to groom itself.

When thinking back to that day, Paul just laughs at what took place when he discovered Siam and Hidey in the same home. Sounds horror-movie-ish, alright!

But it all worked out for the best. Paul’s family had gained two new members in the span of just a couple of days. With proper medication and lots of affection, Hidey was getting better and better every day. In a matter of mere months, Hidey was had dropped several pounds and was able to groom itself. The black-white-orange splotches of fur returned to full color.

Hidey was going through weight issues when it was first rescued. Feasting on nothing but scraps of fatty foods made her as chonky as a chonky cat can be. Although a fat cat is absolutely adorable (except for Garfield), obesity can cause a cat to become more dependent on its owner for nourishment since it obviously can’t hunt for itself.

Even though Hidey wasn’t very much of a joy to be around with in the beginning, it eventually warmed up to its new environment. At first, Hidey was hesitant to befriend its fellow brothers and sisters, and it would also wouldn’t eat when anyone was around. However, over time, Hidey become more accepting of its new environment and has returned to its natural feline nature of snoozing and dozing all day long.

It shocking to see how dramatic a cat can change with some affection. Before, it was dirtier than the home it lived it. Now, after just a couple of months of constant affection and dieting, Hidey is back to her healthy self, all thanks to Paul Russell’s limitless generosity.
