Today we are gonna to have an experiment about expansion and contraction.
So we have many little things here.
For this experiment, you’ll need a candle.A wire holder.A steel ball.A metal holder.A plastic handle.A connector.A lighter
做这个实验 你需要一个蜡烛,一个线圈支架,一个铁球,一个金属支架,一个塑料把手,一个连接器,一个打火机

The first thing we have is this little piece of steel that we don’t want to hold.Later when we do the experiment, you don’t want to touch it.
首先我们有这个小铁片 我们不要用手去拿。一会儿当我们做实验的时候 你们不要用手去碰它哦

So we have a little handle.And we can make our handle, so we put this little blue piece in there.And then just click it into these holes.
我们这儿有一个小蜡烛。我们要做手柄 所以我们将这个小小的蓝色零件。然后按在这些孔上

And now when we do the experiment we can hold this blue part.
现在当我们做实验的时候 我们就可以拿着这个蓝色的部分了

OK next is we have this little steel ball.And we’re gonna put it right on top of this guy.

Now we have some fire, today we’re gonna use some fire, okay, with our little candle.We want to make sure that you’re very careful, okay?

And you can see now the first thing is when I try to put this hole over the ball, what happen?

It won’t go down.
它不会下降

It can’t go all the way down, let’s see, try one more time.Even if I push it, it can’t go down.

But I want it to go down so let’s see what we can do.

So we have our machine here that can make our fire.So we’re gonna light our candle. Just like that, okay.

Now before we try to put this over the ball and wecan’t put it over the ball.So we’re gonna put this circle part right into the fire, okay.

And we can do this for, maybe we can try 30 seconds
我们这个部分 差不多做30秒.

Now, why are we putting this in the fire?Yes, the fire is very hot.

And the fire will do something to our metal.Hey, it will do something to it.
这个火也会让我们的金属发生变化。嘿 它会让它发生变化

Does your hand feel hot?你的手觉得烫吗？
My hands don’t feel hot cause remember we put our plastic blue handle onto the metal part.
我的手没有感觉到热 因为要记住哦 我们将蓝色塑料手柄按在了金属零件上

So when I hold onto the plastic blue part I don’t feel the heat.
所以当我拿着蓝色的地方的时候 我感受不到热

The blue part can protect your hands.
蓝色的地方可以保护我们的手

OK so that’s about 30 seconds.Now you want to see what happens there, let’s see.

We can put this over the ball.Wow, went right over top, let’s do it again.

This is because of expansion, right, when we heat the metal, the metal will grow a little bigger.

Why does the metal expand when heated?
为什么当我们加热时 金属片膨胀了呢？

The metal is made up of millions and millions tiny atoms.The heat will force the atoms to vibrate or move faster.This vibration will separate the atoms slightly.And the metal object will expand.
金属是由成千上百万的小原子组成的。热量会迫使这些原子震动或者更快速的移动起来。这个震动会让原子们轻微的分散开。所以金属物体就会扩大
