📌 拓展walking in the autumn

How birds find their home?

Sun/moon/stars: Birds are able to use the sun in order to have a sense of the time of the day and even nocturnal birds use the setting sun to guide themselves. Since nocturnal birds do not have the option of the sun as a reference through the night, they instead use the stars to guide themselves.

Landmarks: Birds also use familiar landmarks to help navigate themselves – such as mountain peaks, valleys, rivers and roads. Scientists have continued their research into the field of migration and migratory patterns in birds to try and also look at the role of a bird’s sense of smell in their navigation systems

Magnetite: Certain birds also have a trace amount of the mineral 'magnetite' in their beaks. Magnetite works like a bird's compass, aligning itself with Earth's magnetic field to help them gauge the direction of Earth's magnetic poles.

You have probably seen that birds tend to fly in a V-Formation while migrating or making trips to find food. There is usually one bird at the front that leads the way and the other birds in the flock lines up at the back in right or left making a V shape in the sky.

There are two reasons birds might fly in a V formation: It may make flight easier, or they're simply following the leader. Squadrons of planes can save fuel by flying in a V formation, and many scientists suspect that migrating birds do the same.

How do Seeds Spread?

Plants spread their seeds in several ways.

Wind: Many, like the dandelion, have flying or drifting seeds that depend on the wind to carry them through the air.

Drop: Other plants have exploding seed pods that fling seeds into the air.

Animals: Many seeds are contained inside tasty fruits, including nuts and berries. These get eaten by hungry birds and other small animals. The seeds then get dispersed through the animal's droppings. Some seeds are attached to animal fur and get carried away.

Water: Some water plants, such as lotuses and lilies, let their seeds fall on the water and float away.

In autumn each year, deciduous trees lose their leaves. Before the leaves shed, they turn orange, red or brown. While evergreen trees carry their leaves throughout the year. Evergreens do shed their leaves, but only a few at a time and over a long period, so there is never a noticeable change. For most evergreen trees, the leaves don't change color. Generally, they’re always green.

What is Thanksgiving Day?

Every year on the fourth Thursday of November we celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States of America. It is a day of family, friends, eating, and football. Sometimes Thanksgiving is referred to as turkey day because so many people eat turkey on Thanksgiving.
