Primates灵长类动物

Primates are a group of mammals that includes apes, monkeys, lemurs, bushbabies, and lorises.

Humans are primates, too.

All primates have:

1) a large brain compared to their body size.

2) They are also good climbers with flexible limbs. They have strong arms and legs, and long, grasping fingers and toes.

3) The eyes of primates face forward to help them judge distance accurately. (Toward facing eyes)

4) As mammals, they can maintain a constant body temperature.

1.Apes

Apes are a group of intelligent primates that includes the greater apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans) and the lesser apes (gibbons).

Apes are our closest living relatives.

Their arms and hands are longer than their legs and feet, and they can use both their hands and feet for grasping.

Apes are mainly vegetarians (plant-eaters), and they all live in forests.

They can climb, but only the orangutan and the gibbons spend most of their time in trees.

Gorillas

Gorillas are the largest of all the great apes. They may look fierce, but they are shy and peaceful unless they feel threatened.

These apes spend most of their time on the ground and feed mainly on plant stems, leaves, and berries. They walk on all fours with their hands curled over so that their knuckles touch the ground.

Gorillas live in small groups, or troops, of up to 20 individuals. Each troop contains several females and their young, led by a dominant adult male.

The male defends the troop, roaring and beating his chest with his fists to scare off intruders. If this does not work, he may charge and knock over or bite the attacker.

Chimpanzees

The great ape known as the chimpanzee, or chimp, is among the most intelligent of all animals.

It is also one of the very few animals that can make and use tools.

Chimpanzees live in close-knit groups of up to 120 individuals, and they communicate using many different calls and facial expressions.

They eat all types of food, particularly fruit and leaves, but also seeds, flowers, insects, birds, and other animals.

These powerful apes often work together to hunt monkeys and small antelope. They may even kill chimps that stray from other groups.

Gibbons

Gibbons are also known as lesser apes, because they are very different from great apes such as gorillas and chimpanzees. They are much smaller than great apes and they spend almost all their time in trees.

Unlike great apes, gibbons do not build nests. Instead, they sleep upright on branches, resting on hard pads of skin on their bottoms.

Gibbons live in the rain forests of southern Asia. In the early morning and late afternoon they sing loud songs to keep other gibbons out of their territory.

Gibbons have long arms and use their hands like hooks to swing from branch to branch. This way of moving is called brachiation.

2.Monkeys

Closely related to apes, monkeys are primates that have a tail and usually live in trees. In some species, the tail is longer than the rest of the body.

Monkeys are most easily distinguished from apes by their tails. Apes have no tails.

Apes and spider monkeys swing arm-to-arm in trees, but most monkeys don’t. Instead, they run across branches.

Monkeys have a relatively large brain and they use their nimble, grasping hands for tasks such as gathering food and picking apart fruit.

Monkeys can grasp with both their fingers and their toes.

They are good climbers, and they live mainly in tropical forests. A group of monkeys is called a troop.

What Do Monkeys Eat?

Monkeys of all types have completely different diets, but most monkeys eat both animals and plants. Some also eat dirt. Monkeys are omnivores.

Monkeys peel their bananas and do not eat the skins.

They’ll pretty much eat anything that smells good, or bad.

They are very, very sociable and they have a mostly friendly attitude towards humans. Some of them though are a bit naughty as they can cause a lot of damage to crops. They’re seen as pests.

Monkeys in Groups

Monkeys work in groups when they’re on the hunt for some yummy food.

There’s always a leader who gathers the food, while the other monkeys stand guard.

They speak their own language and each other to danger.

But sometimes a leader will be a bit of a liar. If he’s found some food he likes, he’ll warn the others that there’s danger and keep it all for him. That’s not so cool.

Chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans all catch cold but curiously monkeys do not. All monkeys like to be clean so they have a barber monkey clean out their fur. The barber monkey’s payment is the bugs in its customer’s hair.

Different kind of monkeys

Monkeys that live in Central and South America are known as New World monkeys. Those that live in Africa and Asia are called Old World monkeys.

New World monkeys

New World monkeys live in the lush jungles of Central and South America. They include howler monkeys, tamarins, marmosets, and many more. Unlike their Old World relatives, New World monkeys spend almost all their time in the trees. Some New World monkeys have a prehensile (gripping) tail that can wrap around branches like an extra hand. Others, such as uakaris, can make amazing leaps, while tiny squirrel monkeys can run along even the smallest branches. New World monkeys tend to have flatter noses than Old World monkeys, and their nostrils are more widely separated.

Old World monkeys

The monkeys of Africa and Asia are known as Old World monkeys, and they include baboons, mandrills, proboscis monkeys, and macaques. They are found in almost every kind of habitat, from mangrove swamps to mountain forests. Some are tree-dwellers, but others spend much of their time on the ground. Unlike New World monkeys, Old World monkeys cannot grip with their tail, and in some species the tail is very short. These monkeys have nostrils that point forward or downward, rather than sideways like those of New World monkeys. The Old World monkeys are more closely related to apes than the New World monkeys are.

Monkeys vs. Apes区别

Things you need to know about getting lost

• Know your parent's name and phone number.

Practice mom's and dad's names and phone numbers over and over so you remember them. Make learning my phone numbers easier by turning them into songs.

• If you get lost, stop where you are and yell

You aren't often allowed to really yell as loud as possible but this is exactly what you need to do.

Let us practice this. Yell your name or “mom/dad” over and over. Being loud will help me hear where you are.

• Look for a mom with kids and ask for help.

• Know that you will be found.

Don't hide because you're scared. Don't go searching the area. And certainly don't leave the area . Take a deep breath and remember your safety steps.

We know it isn't easy to talk about these things, especially if you are already anxious. But talking about these things actually helps to ease the anxiety because you're getting tools that will make you feel empowered in the situation rather than helpless.

You should never get into a car with someone you don't know.

It’s wrong to trust anyone you are not familiar with;

in fact sometimes even people you know could be harmful.

If a stranger let you go into his car ,you can yell "help" louldly and you can call 110 for help from policeman.

Sometimes when we are sick, our parents give us medicine to help us get better. Is it okay to take medicine you might find in the medicine cabinet if you're feeling sick and there are no grown ups around?

no. We should ask for help from mommy and daddy.

While medicines can help us when we're sick, some can be dangerous, especally if we take too much of them. And some medicines that are okay for adults are dangerous for children. Even something like aspirin can be dangerous for kids.

If you try to take medicine by yourself, you might take too much, or take the wrong medicine. If you're feeling sick, tell your mom or dad and let them get the medicine for you.

You should never play with plastic bags.

Plastic bags may look harmless, but you should never play with them.

It is too easy to get trapped inside one, if it's large, and even if it is smaller, it can cover your mouth and nose so you are unable to breathe.

Why should you not run around your house when you are using scissors?

You should never run or engage in rough play when holding scissors, or any other sharp object, such as a knife or a pencil.

If run, you could fall, and you could seriously injure yourself, or someone else.

The best scissors for kids are those with rounded ends. You still have to be careful because all scissors are sharp, and you could cut yourself.

There are probably electrical outlets in every room of your house.

Why should you never try to stick your fingers or anything else into an electrical outlet?

Electricity is very, very dangerous.

If you are old enough, your parents may let you plug things into outlets by yourself, but you must be very careful.

Never touch the metal prongs on the plug, and never plug in something if your hands are wet.

And never, ever try to stick your tongue or fingers into an electrical outlet!

You could be seriously hurt, or even killed.
