Each troop contains several females and their young, led by a dominant adult male. </p><p class="ql-block"><b>The male defends the troop, roaring and beating his chest with his fists</b> to scare off intruders. If this does not work, he may charge and knock over or bite the attacker.</p> <p class="ql-block"><b>Chimpanzees</b></p><p class="ql-block">The great ape known as the chimpanzee, or chimp, is among the<b> most intelligent of all animals. </b></p><p class="ql-block">I<b>t is also one of the very few animals that can make and use tools. </b></p><p class="ql-block">Chimpanzees live in close-knit groups of up to 120 individuals, and <b>they communicate using many different calls and facial expressions. </b></p><p class="ql-block">They eat <b>all types of food, particularly fruit and leaves, but also seeds, flowers, insects, birds, and other animals. </b></p><p class="ql-block">These powerful apes often work together to hunt monkeys and small antelope. They may even kill chimps that stray from other groups.</p> <p class="ql-block"><b>Gibbons</b></p><p class="ql-block">Gibbons are also known as<b> lesser apes</b>, because they are very different from great apes such as gorillas and chimpanzees. <b>They are much smaller than great apes and they spend almost all their time in trees. </b></p><p class="ql-block">Unlike great apes, <b>gibbons do not build nests. Instead, they sleep upright on branches,</b> resting on hard pads of skin on their bottoms. </p><p class="ql-block">Gibbons live in the rain forests of southern Asia. <b>In the early morning and late afternoon they sing loud songs to keep other gibbons out of their territory. </b></p><p class="ql-block"><b>Gibbons have long arms and use their hands like hooks to swing from branch to branch</b>. If he’s found some food he likes, he’ll warn the others that there’s danger and keep it all for him. That’s not so cool.</p><p class="ql-block">Chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans all catch cold but curiously monkeys do not. <b>All monkeys like to be clean so they have a barber monkey clean out their fur. The barber monkey’s payment is the bugs in its customer’s hair.</b></p> <p class="ql-block"><u>Different kind of monkeys</u></p><p class="ql-block">Monkeys that live in Central and South America are known as New World monkeys. Those that live in Africa and Asia are called Old World monkeys.</p><p class="ql-block"><b>New World monkeys</b></p><p class="ql-block">New World monkeys live in the lush jungles of Central and South America. They include howler monkeys, tamarins, marmosets, and many more. Unlike their Old World relatives, New World monkeys spend almost all their time in the trees. Some New World monkeys have a prehensile (gripping) tail that can wrap around branches like an extra hand. Others, such as uakaris, can make amazing leaps, while tiny squirrel monkeys can run along even the smallest branches. New World monkeys tend to have flatter noses than Old World monkeys, and their nostrils are more widely separated.</p><p class="ql-block"><b>Old World monkeys</b></p><p class="ql-block">The monkeys of Africa and Asia are known as Old World monkeys, and they include baboons, mandrills, proboscis monkeys, and macaques. They are found in almost every kind of habitat, from mangrove swamps to mountain forests. Some are tree-dwellers, but others spend much of their time on the ground. Unlike New World monkeys, Old World monkeys cannot grip with their tail, and in some species the tail is very short. These monkeys have nostrils that point forward or downward, rather than sideways like those of New World monkeys.
