Just like airplanes do. The peregrine falcon is one of the fastest birds. It can reach speeds of well over 100 miles per hour when diving. Feathers are important to birds because they keep them warm, help them to fly, and provide camouflage. Hollow bones also help in flying because they help make the bird light enough to fly. Ostriches are birds that can't fly Source: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Not All Birds Fly Although an important characteristic of most birds is flying, not all birds fly. Some birds that don't fly are penguins, kiwis, and ostriches. Penguins actually spend a good portion of time in the water where they are prolific swimmers. Ostriches on the other hand are very fast runners. An ostrich can outrun a horse!

types of Birds

There are all sizes of birds. Hummingbirds are some of the smallest birds, while ostriches are some of the biggest. Different types of birds eat different things. Some birds feed on plants, some birds eat insects, and still others eat other animals like fish, snakes, or rodents. Birds are also known for their massive migrating patterns. Some Birds will travel long distances each season to stay in a climate that is good for their survival. Birds are sometimes kept as pets. The most popular birds for pets are tropical birds like parrots. Birds also have a history of helping out humans in various tasks. When we finished, we reflected on how it went and which beaks were easier. One of the funny things was when a kid would drop their food.
● 常见的具体的鸟

Peacocks--A peacock uses his train to attract the attention of peahens The peacock is famous for having some of the biggest and most beautiful feathers of any bird. Peahens are plainer(平常的). The peacock’s long feathers trail behind him, forming a “train.” They look like his tail, but are actually attached at the base of the real tail, which is much shorter and hidden underneath the train. A peacock uses his train to attract the attention of peahens. Facing the peahen, he lifts the feathers upward and spreads them out to make a giant fan. He then shakes them to make a rustling(沙沙的) sound. The peahen chooses the peacock with the best display. He becomes the father of her eggs, but the peahen raises her family alone. A peacock’s colorful train can be 1.8m long. A peacock’s train feathers are longer than the length of its body.

Eagle--The biggest and most powerful birds of prey. The daytime hunters that swoop down and attack with their claws are called birds of prey. This group includes eagles, hawks and so on. They have much sharper eyesight than humans. They hunt for food while flying high in the sky and use their long, deadly claws to snatch fish from water, strike birds in mid-air, or lift an animal off the ground. Once the prey has been caught, these birds use their sharp, hooked beaks to tear up their fresh meal. The biggest and most powerful birds of prey include eagles. The largest eagles can catch big animals, such as deer. Most eagles eat small mammals, but some eagles have special diets and eat snakes, fish, eggs, or even other birds. Eagles have big eyes. Their vision is at least twice as sharp as a human’s eyesight.

Ostrich--The world’s largest bird. The ostrich is the world’s largest bird. It has big wings, but they are not strong enough for flying. This means that it must rely on its strong legs for walking and running. Like other flightless birds, its feathers are loose and fluffy(松软的), and they do not hold together to form a flat surface. Ostriches live on open grassland and desert plains. They will eat anything from seeds and grass to lizards and frogs. An ostrich can run up to 70km per hour, making it the fastest of all running birds. Ostriches also lay the biggest eggs of any animal. Many females lay their eggs in a single, shared nest, which is just a little hole in the ground. The eggs hatch into fluffy chicks that can walk almost immediately.

Parrot--Parrots are among the cleverest of all birds, and most are noisy. The parrot’s bill can be used as a third foot for climbing through trees. Most birds mainly rely on moving their lower bill to open their mouth, but parrots are able to move their upper bill too. This helps them to grip and handle food, such as fruits or nuts. Parrots have strong feet for climbing and walking on the ground. Each foot has two toes facing forward and two facing backward, which helps them to hold on to objects. Parrots have pointed or rounded wings. Almost all parrots can fly fast and change direction quickly to move through the branches of trees.

Flamingos--Flamingos have bright pink feathers Flamingos are birds with a long neck and long legs. They wade(蹚过) along the edges of lakes . Flamingos eat plankton(浮游生物), which are tiny water plants and creatures that float in water, such as algae and shrimp. Chemicals in the plankton turn the flamingo’s feathers pink. Flamingos feed by bending their heads upside down and dipping their beaks into the water. They use their fleshy(多肉的) tongues to squeeze water , and trap the plankton. Flamingos have bright pink feathers, sometimes with patches of red on their wings. The birds get their coloring from the food they eat. The shrimp and algae that they feed on turn the birds’ feathers pink.

2.4 Primates(Milly妈妈)

2.4.1 Introduction--About primate 灵长目动物(辅助图片)

Long long ago, there was no life on the earth.
