英译李鸿章《入都》之一

李鸿章（1823年2月15日—1901年11月7日），晚清名臣，洋务运动的主要领导人之一，安徽合肥人。

作为淮军、北洋水师的创始人和统帅、洋务运动的领袖、晚清重臣，官至直隶总督兼北洋通商大臣，授文华殿大学士，近代历史多称其为罪人。著有《李文忠公全集》。与曾国藩、张之洞、左宗棠并称为“中兴四大名臣”，与俾斯麦、格兰特并称为“十九世纪世界三大伟人”。

赴试途中有感《入都》之一

丈夫只手把吴钩，意气高于百尺楼。

一万年来谁著史，八千里外觅封侯。

定将捷足随途骥，那有闲情逐水鸥。

笑指泸沟桥畔月，几人从此到瀛洲。

True man could wield the Wu Hook with a single hand,

His spirit soars beyond the high towering stand.

For ten centuries history made by which names?

From thousands miles away, one seeks the marquis fame.

He will steadfastly follow swift the course with steed,

Who has the leisure to chase water-gulls indeed?

He would laugh and point to the moonlit Bridge Lugou,

How few elites can ever make way to Yinzhou?

注释 Note:

Wugou: Sharp weaponry in ancient times, refers to top talent.

Baichilou: A story from Chen Deng of the Three Kingdoms, refers to a scholar with heart for the people and the country.可以译为 high tower.

Due: 此处意为正对着。

Lugou Bridge: A bridge outside the capital Beijing，known for its glamourous moonlight.

Yinzhou: A distinguished literature forum in Tang Dynasty.

作品背景：

清朝道光二十三年（1843年），李鸿章21岁，其年入选优贡，奉父亲李文安之命，自老家安徽入京，以应翌年顺天乡试。李鸿章入京时作《入都》诗十首。

这首诗创作于自信之余，特充溢豪气，大有天下侯爵舍我其谁，晚清历史唯我是著之意。十诗中，此诗最为世人称道。前两联说尽诗人一生。运转晚清机枢，捭阖欧美交际，尽李公“只手”而已。尾联为诗眼，尽得诗家韵味，意蕴尤长。“笑指”二字，含而不露；“几人”云云，自信而无张扬。
