瓦萨尔（Wassail ）热饮基本配方：混合了苹果酒、苹果、橘子、柠檬等水果和酒，并加入了丰富的香料，以丁香肉桂为主。
每年橘子、苹果丰收的季节都收到亲戚在自己院子里种的各种水果，这些果子没有洒过农药，特别适合连皮一起吃。做一锅Wassail热饮正合适，这几天洛杉矶有点冷，喝这热饮，既提神又暖胃。

N年前我在Newport Beach海边住的时候，认识了一对意大利裔的夫妇，太太特别喜欢煮Wassail热饮，经常邀我去喝，说是沿用她外婆的配方，他们家离我的住处不远，从后门出去拐右，蹓跶蹓跶就到他们家了。

他们家的男主当年也算得上个人物，大学工商管理的课里，成功案例必定会提到他和他的伙伴，两个刚刚大学毕业的毛头小子，居然成功地击败了美国首富特朗普，一举拿下亚特兰大赌城的一个大项目，我时不时也会在各种场合听到有人津津乐道地聊起这个案例。我是先从教科书里认识了他，后来才成了邻居。

这是我这次做的Wassail热饮

话说回来这个热饮，我对这个 饮料印象比较深刻，因为泡在果酒里的橘子上插满了丁香，特别像水雷。由于他们是意大利的后裔，导致我一直认为这个热饮是意大利的特色饮料，多年后才发现英国人比较流行Wassail饮料以及这项庆祝活动，也许当年罗马人统治英国的时候，也学会了做这个热饮，后来慢慢流传到世界各地。 瓦萨尔（Wassail）一词可追溯到基督教前的英国，根据牛津英语词典，“Wassail”这个词起源于古挪威语称呼 ves heill，对应古英语 hál wes þú 或 wes hál——字面意思是“身体健康”或“幸运”。
盎格鲁-撒克逊人（Anglo-Saxons）的传统是在年底举行庄园盛会，他们把面包片沾一点Wassail饮料挂在树上，然后喝着瓦萨尔热饮，在苹果树下载歌载舞，他们庆祝今年的丰收并祈祷来年有个好收成，这个传统一直延续至今。

这个庆典活动有几首祝酒歌，其中一首比较流行的是Gloucestershire Wassail。
