海明威（1899年7月21日－1961年7月2日），美国小说家。海明威出生于美国伊利诺伊州芝加哥市郊区的奥克帕克，晚年在爱达荷州凯彻姆的家中自杀身亡。海明威代表作有《老人与海》、《太阳照样升起》、《丧钟为谁而鸣》等，凭借《老人与海》获得1953年普利策奖及1954年诺贝尔文学奖。

In a calm sea every man is a pilot.

风平浪静的大海上，每个人都是领航员。

But all sunshine without shade,

但是，只有阳光而无阴影，

all pleasure without pain,

只有欢乐而无痛苦。

is not life at all.

那就不是人生。

Take the lot of the happiest,

以最幸福的人生为例——

it is a tangled yarn.

它是一团相互缠绕的纱线。

make us sad and blessed by turns.

使我们悲喜交加。

Men come closest to their true seives

in the sober moments of life,

在人生的清醒时刻，

under the shadows of sorrow and loss.

在哀痛和失落的阴影之下，

In the affairs of life or of business,

人们与真实的自我最为接近。

it is not intellect that tells so much as character,

就人生或者职业而言，才智的作用不如性格。

not brains so much as heart,

头脑的作用不如心性

not genius so much as self-control,

patience,and discipline,regulated by judgment.

天资则不如由判断力所拿控的自制、耐心和规律。

I have always believed that,

我始终相信，

the man who has begun to live more seriously ,

开始在内心生活得更严肃的人，

within begins to live more simply without.

也会在外表上开始生活得更朴素。

In an age of extravagance and waste,

在一个奢侈浪费的时代，

I wish I could show to the world：

我希望能向世界证明：

how few the real wants of humanity are.

人类真正需要的东西是少之又少。

To regret one's errors，

悔恨自己的错误，

to the point of not repeating them is true repentan.

而且力求不再重蹈覆辙，

There is nothing noble

in being superior to some other man.

这才是真正的悔悟。

优于别人，并不高贵。

The true nobility is

in being superior to your previous self.

真正的高贵应该是优于过去的自己。

海明威笔下的顿悟：人生是“悲”与“喜”交替

人性是“贪婪”与“虚荣”并存。

超越自我，优于过去的自己，才是人类最应该追求的东西，也是人之为人的高贵之处！
