Plant an Apple Tree

Two main types of roots:

Primary/taproot (主根)

This is taproot. The taproot of the tree is the thickest. It holds the plants in the soil and takes in water and nutrients.

Secondary/lateral root (侧根)

The lateral roots branches from the taproot. It helps support the tree and also takes in water and nutrients from the soil.

Tree ring 年轮

p: Look at the picture, this is a part of the tree trunk. What can you see?

p: yes. they are called growth rings. There are a lot of rings on the cross section of the trunk.

We can find out a lot about a tree by looking at the rings in its trunk.

1)First year growth: One ring usually stands for one year of the tree's life. You can know how old the tree is from the rings.

Because they keep the tree alive by supplying it with food and water.

we can see the apples and leaves on the branches. we can see the branches growing out of the trunk. we can see the trunk growing out of the ground. we can see the bark of the tree.The bark covers the branches and the trunk.

But there is a part of the tree that we can not see, the roots, they are under the ground. Some of the roots are large. Some of them are as small as hairs. The roots grow under the ground. If we dig deeply,we can see the roots of the tree in the soil. A tree could not live without roots.

Roots hold the trunk in the ground. Roots keep the tree from falling down when the wind blows. Roots keep the rain from washing the tree out of the ground. Roots do something more. They take water from the ground.

The roots can carry the water to the trunk of the tree. The trunk carries the water to the branches. The branches carry the water to the leaves.
