1 .moon, sun and earth

M:Baby,does the moon give off light?

B:NO!

M:Great.But the moon looks Bright.let's find out why the moon looks Bright.look,what is this ?

M:we have three objects.the Bright orange object is the sun.the gray one is the moon and the blue one is earth. what's happening to them ?

M: the sun is shining light on to the moon and the moon reflects light on to the earth.

M:what does reflect mean? reflect means throw back light.so the reason that the moon shine Bright is because it reflects light coming from the sun.

M:if you look at the moon carefully,you'll find that only half of the moon actually faces the sun and reflect sun light .

M:look there are two objects .do you recognize them?

B：moon and earth

M:nice try. the smaller gray one is the moon and the bigger blue one is earth .but what is the moon doing?

M:well done. the moon is orbiting earth. what does it mean?

M: orbit means to move around .the moon orbits earth which means the moon moves around the earth.do you know how long it takes for the moon to orbit that means how long it takes for the moon to finish one circle around the earth ?

B:I do not know.

M: it takes the moon twenty seven point three two two days to orbit earth.this is almost one month.

M: we see different moon phase in a month.do you know why?

M: when the moon orbit earth and it is in different positions around the earth. does the person that on earth see the same shape of the moon?

B:NO

M:perfect.It is different shape of the moon.let's take a look at the model.when the moon goes in a certain position,we may see the curve like this,one beautiful right. but then when it goes to another position, we may see a full moon like this one.but it's still the same moon.so does the moon change its shape as it orbits earth?

B:NO

M:good job.the moon doesn't change itself at all. the moon is always in the shape of a ball,but what changes is our view of the moon.

view means what you see.

M:so when we see the moon with different angle when it's moving in different positions around the earth where we are .we see little parts of the moon because the sun light is heating different part of the moon

M:so the moon doesn't actually change what it looks like.but the parts of the moon reflect sun light changes and that's why we see different shape.

M: where is the moon relative to the sun and the earth when we see a new moon let's find out.look at the picture on the right. can we see the moon in the sky ?

M: well.we can barely see the moon because it is very very dark if you look at it carefully you will find there is a very deep white ring around the moon.this moon is called new moon. new moon is usually invisible from earth.

M: do you know when a new moon appears?

B:I don't know

M:well.let's take a look at the model. when the moon is between the earth and the sun, a new moon appears.do you know why?

M:that's because when the moon is between the sun and the earth,the side of the moon that reflects the sun light coming from the sun is facing away from your eyes on the earth.

M:if the sun is here and the moon is here, the moon is going to reflect the sun back ,but the earth is over here. so we are not getting any of the light that the moon reflects and that's why we can hardly see the moon at all.

M:we know a new moon appears when the moon is between the earth and the sun.but when does a full moon appear?

M:let's find out.look at the model. a full moon just like this one.a full moon is very very Bright and it looks like around.

M:when does the full moon appear?

M:when the earth is between the moon and the sun,the full moon appears.

M:do you know why?

M:that's because the half of the moon surface reflecting sun light is facing toward on earth.

M:the light is coming from the sun to the moon and being reflected back this way and here is the earth. so the earth get to see all of the sun light being reflected by the moon.because of this, people can see a full moon

M:a full moon appears when the earth is between the moon and the sun.

最后理解了月亮不发光，太阳发光，月亮反射太阳光才有的光，知道了各种月相的形态和名字，但是不是特别理解什么情况下产生什么样的月相。大点再复盘吧！

3. meteoroid, meteor and meteorite

meteoroid: a small rock or particle of debris in our solar system. They range in size from dust to around 10 metres in diameter (larger objects are usually referred to as asteroids).

meteor: A meteoroid that burns up as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere is known as a meteor. If you’ve ever looked up at the sky at night and seen a streak of light or ‘shooting star’ what you are actually seeing is a meteor.

Meteors are easier to see during the lower light conditions of night.

A small percentage of meteoroids fly on a path that goes into the Earth’s atmosphere and then back out again, they are known as Earth grazing fireballs.

When many meteors occur in a close time in the same part of the sky it is called a meteor shower.

meteorite: A meteoroid that survives falling through the Earth’s atmosphere and colliding with the Earth’s surface is known as a meteorite.

Meteorites that are observed as they fall through the Earth’s atmosphere and later recovered are called ‘falls’, all others are called ‘finds’.

You’ll need: coloured paper, googly eyes, plus pipe cleaners and pom poms (optional)

First ask your child to draw and cut out a wobbly alien shape.

Now they fill it with googly eyes!

Now your child adds antennae (if you don’t have pipe cleaners or pom poms they can miss out this part.

Finally draw a goofy smile.
