A long time ago, children would leave home at around 10 years old so that they could start making money for their family. Lots of children worked at servants（ ['sɜːrvənt]仆人） in big houses. The servants could not go home very often. Every year, the servants were allowed to go home on the fourth Sunday of Lent（[lent]大斋节）. On this special day, servants could spend time with their family and go to church （[tʃɜːrtʃ] 教堂）together as they walked home, the servants would pick flowers from the side of the path and give them to their mothers. After the Civil（[ˈsɪvl]民间的） War, Anna Jarvis's mother believed that mothers who had lost their sons should be given an anniversary（[ˌænɪˈvɜːrsəri]纪念日） and hoped that someone would create a Mother's Day to praise mothers around the world. After her mother died, Anna Jarvis was determined to realize her mother's wish. To this end, she appealed（ [əˈpiːld]呼吁） to society and received strong support from all sides.
