Where must the puma have come from?

Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the deions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.

The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of "cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

当你刚一看到文章的标题时，是不是感觉puma这个词很熟悉？puma就是与阿迪达斯，耐克，茵宝，卡帕，美津浓等齐名的世界运动品牌彪马的英文拼写。

彪马这两个字是puma的音译，而puma真正的英文含义就是美洲狮。

首先通读一遍文章，不管读懂了多少，大致有一种感觉就可以。

对于不认识的词和短语，首先参考下边的生词和短语表，puma意为美洲狮，名词，很好理解，就是一种动物。spot作为名词有地点的意思，但在本文中是动词，意为看出，发现，与find是同义词。evidence意为证据，名词。accumulate是动词，意为积累，名词形式为accumulation。oblige意为使….感到必须，feel oblige则为短语，意思则是感到必须。hunt意为打猎，既是名词也是动词，hunter则是猎人，hunt for 意为寻找，为常用短语。blackberry也很出名，意为黑莓，为欧洲一以小键盘擅发邮件而著名的手机品牌。同类词有strawberry

草莓，blueberry蓝莓，cranberry小红莓等等。human being意为人类，名词。corner以前见过名词，意为角落，在本文中为动词，意为使走投无路，逼到角落。trail 意思为一串，一系列，常用短语a trail of。print 名词意为印痕，印刷，动词意思也是印刷。cling 意思为粘，短语为cling to。convince 意思为使….信服，用法一般为convince sb，意为使某人信服。somehow 为副词，意为不知怎么搞的，在文中直接翻译就行。disturb作为动词常用意思是打扰，在本文中为令人不安。

生词表里的词就这么多，此外文中还有些比较常用的词和短语，可能之前没有见过，对于这些词和短语，要在词典中查，如seriously, expert, investigate, deion, claim, extraordinarily, yard, immediately, run away, confirm, attack, prove, observe,等等。

此外，本文中突出的句子结构就是定语从句。以下句子都是文中的定语从句原句，仔细观察每句话，模仿定语从句的句子结构，试着自己去造定语从句。

这是一句which引导的定语从句，which代替的就是前面的animals,翻译这个句子时要把which后边的翻译成定语，则是美洲狮是在美洲被发现的大个像猫的动物。

我模仿上句造出的句子如下：Tom is a cat which is kept in my house.

意为：汤姆是被养在我家的一只猫。

2. experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the deions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.

这是一句who引导的定语从句。which 引导定语从句代替的是物，who代替的是人。

这句话意思是：因为那些声称看到美洲狮的人所描述的极其相似，来自动物园的专家感到必须去调查了。

The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her.

这是一句where引导的定语从句。Where代替的是地点。

句子翻译为：搜寻美洲狮是在一个妇女摘黑莓时看到一只大猫只离她五码的小村庄开始的。

这种直译看起来很混乱，不好理解，一般会这样翻译：搜寻美洲狮在一个小村庄开始，有一个妇女在那里摘黑莓时看到一只大猫只离她五码。
