You are on a picnic and it's a hot, sunny day. You are ready to cool off with the bright red treat waiting for you! It's sweet and juicy, but watch out for those hard, black seeds! As you bite into the delicious slice, the cool juice runs down your chin and onto your shirt. This is what summer tastes like. This is a watermelon!

M:A watermelon is a large, oval fruit with green skin; sweet, juicy pulp; and seeds. Although red watermelons are the most common ones we see, they come in other colors, too, like orange, yellow and white. Watermelons are 92% water and related to cucumbers, squash and pumpkins.

Different colored watermelons taste a little different from each other because of the substances that give them their colors, but they are all sweet. For example, the substance that gives red watermelons their color (lycopene) is the same thing that gives red tomatoes their color, and the substance that gives carrots their orange color (beta-carotene) is the same thing that gives orange watermelons their color!

M: We eat fruits and vegetables every day,because they are good for our health. Fruits and vegetables are all plants. We eat different parts of plants. We eat flowers, seeds ,stems,roots,bulbs,tubers, fruits and leaves.

• We eat the stems of the celery.

• We eat the roots of carrots.
• We eat the leaves of lettuce.
