1.The name of the Festival

May 1 is International Workers' Day.

In more than 80 countries, people celebrate the international workers' day on May 1st. So, it is also called May Day.

In the United States and Canada, the holiday is called Labor /ˈleɪbə/ Day, because "Labor" is another word for work. They celebrate on the first Monday in September.

中国的五一劳动节，比较适合的英语名称是“ International Workers' Day”或“May Day”。

2. History of the Festival

International Workers' Day originated in Europe in 1891 as a day of celebration of workers around the world.

A long time ago, workers were paid very little and worked very long days. Even small children worked.Originally, International Workers' Day is used as a day to discuss plans for better working conditions.

3. Why do we celebrate International workers' day?

It is a day for workers to feel appreciated and relax!

On International Workers' Day, we honor people who work.

Its very important to honor workers with a holiday. We appreciate the work they do. We should respect workers. Workers make our country a better place.

People work at many places. Some people work at schools, stores, or offices. Some people work at home. Vets, farmers, and firefighters are workers. Teachers and bus drivers are workers, too. There are so many kinds of workers.

劳动节，是专门为劳动者庆祝的节日。我们感激劳动者的付出，更应尊重他们，是他们让国家变得更美好。

On International Workers' Day, workers can rest and play. They can have fun with their families and friends. Some people have picnics. Other people go to parades or go camping.

MAKING A MAY BASKET

Ever heard of the May baskets? People would leave a paper basket or cone with spring flowers and sweets on each other’s doorsteps, usually anonymously/əˈnɒnɪməsli/ .匿名的 If you remain anonymous when you do something, you do not let people know that you were the person who did it. 匿名的

The May Day basket is still a cherished珍藏的 tradition for some Americans though it’s less known today. 

To make a simple May basket, simply take a colored piece of paper and fold it into a cone; then fill with wildflowers!

If you don’t have colored paper, even a rolled-up paper plate would do. Draw on the plate with spring colors and fill with flowers! Cut a handle out of a cereal box or another paper plate and staple to the cone.

You could also fill a real basket with little gifts such as flower seed packets, baked cookies, candies, and pretty trinkets. If you don’t have a basket, an empty milk carton or seed pot would also do the trick达到理想效果.
