Africa Continent

Africa, the second largest continent (after Asia), covering about one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth. The continent is bounded on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, on the east by the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, and on the south by the mingling waters of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

African animals

African elephant

The African bush elephant is the largest land animal in the world. It stands up to 4 m (13.1 ft.) in height, and weighs up to 6,048 kg (13,334 lb.). Both male and female African bush elephants have tusks (only male Asian elephants have tusks).

Besides, the African Elephant is the strongest animal in the whole world!

This should be number one! Better than those stupid cheetahs and lions! Elephants are the real kings of the jungle!

African Elephant Features

Their huge ears help keep African elephants cool in the African sunshine by radiating heat. Perhaps the best known feature of elephants are their multi-functional long trunks, which can be used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking and grabbing things.

Giraffe

Giraffes range in size from 16-18 feet tall. They weigh between 1,600lbs and 3,000lbs, with the males weighing almost 1,000lbs more than the females. Their necks and legs are both around six feet long, the height of a tall man. With their long legs, they are able to run up to 35 miles per hour. In fact, the name giraffe means “fast walker.”

Giraffes use their 21-inch long tongues to wrap around the leaves, pulling them from the tree. Because the leaves contain so much water, giraffes only need to drink water from the watering hole once every several days. This is a good thing, because when the giraffe stoops to drink water, they put themselves in a compromising position with their spread-out legs, making them a target for predators such as the crocodile.

Rhino

Both African species have two horns on their noses. The species’ prominent nose horns, and their large size ensure that they are among the best-known of all African animals.

The white rhinoceros is the largest of all the rhinos, with males (the larger of the two sexes) weighing around 2400 kg (5,000 lb.). The black rhino is by no means a small animal, with males reaching weights of around 1400 kg (3,090 lb.).

Despite their names, both the white and black rhino are grey. The best way of telling them apart is by looking at their lips: the white rhino has square lips; the lips of the black rhino are beak-shaped.

Rhinos are herbivores. Their diet consists mainly of grass.

Rhinoceros use that great big horn of theirs to dig in the ground to get the grass roots and little flower bulbs. Rhinoceros also have a funny shaped top lip. The lip is long and flat so they can use it to get a good sucking grip on grass roots and bulbs, almost like a lawn mower. Even if the desert savannah looks empty and dry, a rhino will be able to find a good meal.
