Understanding halves一半

What happens when you share one whole pizza with another person?

How much pizza will you get? 

How should the pieces be cut If it is to be shared fairly? 

We need to make sure each item is divided equally. 

Together draw some pizzas, cups of juice, cupcakes and cookies, or draw your family meal, then cut or make lines on the drawings to show how they should be divided when sharing with another person. 

Look at things in the real world- whole items such as pies or tables or rooms,liquids such as milk or water ,and groups of things such as grapes or candy or pillows-and ask how they can be divided in half .Draw pictures of this halves.

Find things around the house that demonstrate halves- two small shoes that together are about the same length as one long shoe, shirts and pants that can be folded in half, etc.

Tallying计数

Tally marks are a useful tool for children as they learn how to keep track of objects they are counting and data collected over time. Grouping the tally marks also reinforces the ability to count by fives. 

In this story, When you see a red car, you make a tally mark, "Ⅰ",then make another one for each car. when you are up to three, it will look like this. "Ⅲ"，When you get to five, you make a little bundle with the diagonal tally mark, So they are easy to count. Pay attention to how the characters used tally marks to keep track of how many cars, t-shirts and train cars they count. 

Then list the characters' names on a piece of paper, and then tally the number of times each name is mentioned in the story .After the child is down tallying ,ask questions like "which character was mentioned most often ”"Least often？"

Say a number between 10 and 25. Have the child make tally marks to represent that number. 

Ask the child what he or she thinks is the most common color for glass beads？ Have him tally all the different colors of the glass beads, which was the most common color.
