Child: Wow! Look at all those birds, Mom!宝宝：哇！看那些鸟，妈妈！They're flying in a V-shape.它们排成一个人字在飞行。

如果是排成一字，可以说in a straight line，成一条直线。

Mom: Cool! Looks like those are swan geese heading north for the spring.妈妈：真好！看着像是鸿雁正往北飞过春天。That's how we know the seasons are changing.这样我们也就知道换季了。Child: Why do they go north?宝宝：它们为什么要去北方？Mom: They fly up north from the south every spring妈妈：它们每年春天从南方飞到北方，to mate and have babies.交配和生宝宝。Then in the fall,然后到了秋天，they'll fly back south它们会再飞回南方，

so they can find food during the winter.这样它们才能在冬天找到食物。Child: How do they have babies?宝宝：他们怎么生宝宝啊？Mom: They lay eggs.妈妈：它们下蛋。

Child: Where do they put their eggs?宝宝：它们把蛋放在哪里呢？Mom: Well, swan geese make big nests near the water.妈妈：嗯，鸿雁会在水边筑很大的巢。

The female goose makes a shallow bowl made of sticks, grass, other plants and moss,雌雁会用树枝、草、其他植物和苔藓做一个浅碗，and then she lines it with down,然后她在上面铺上绒毛，which is a soft feather.也就是柔软的羽毛。Child: That sounds cozy.宝宝：听起来很舒服。Mom: Yeah. The mom goose lays about four to eight eggs,妈妈：是啊。雁妈妈会下四到八个蛋，

and the dad goose stands nearby to protect his family雁爸爸会站在一旁保护他的家庭，while she sits on the eggs to keep them warm.雁妈妈会坐在蛋上给它们保暖。Child: How long does she sit on the eggs?宝宝：她要在蛋上坐多久？Mom: She has to lay on the eggs for 28-30 days.妈妈：她要孵28-30天的蛋。Child: That's a long time to sit in one place.宝宝：在一个地方呆这么长时间啊。Mom: It is.妈妈：是的。Child: What other bird migrates?宝宝：还有什么鸟会迁徙？Mom: Well, hummingbirds in the US migrate too.妈妈：嗯，美国的蜂鸟也迁徙。

Mom: They're tiny birds,妈妈：它们是很小的鸟，weighing the same as a small coin.和小硬币一样重。When the days start to get shorter in the fall,到了秋天，天开始变短的时候，they fly all the way from the United States to Costa Rica or Panama.它们会从美国一路飞到哥斯达黎加或者巴拿马。Then they return in the early spring to have babies.然后它们会在初春回来生宝宝。

Child: What do they make their nests out of?宝宝：它们用什么筑巢？Mom: They make their nests out of grasses, plant material and spider webs.妈妈：它们用青草、植物和蜘蛛网来筑巢。

Grasses用作复数指各种草。

They cover the outside of the nest with lichens and dead leaves.它们把地衣和枯叶盖在巢外面。

Lichen读作 [ˈlaikən]。

And they build their little nests in trees or large bushes.

它们在树或者大的灌木上建它们的小巢。

Child: Look at that nest made of sticks in the tree.宝宝：看树上那个树枝做的巢。Which bird does it belong to?它是什么鸟的巢啊？Mom: It's a magpie nest.妈妈：那是喜鹊的巢。

Child: Do magpies migrate?宝宝：喜鹊迁徙吗？Mom: No, they don't.妈妈：它们不迁徙。They're not migratory birds.它们不是候鸟。They're resident birds.它们是留鸟。
