Mom: It's a beautiful day and a little bit windy.

妈妈：今天天气不错，还有点风。

It's a perfect day to fly your new kite!

这个天气非常适合放你的新风筝！

Shall we go to the park and fly it?

咱们去公园放吧？

Child: Yes, yes!

宝宝：好呀，好呀！

How do you fly a kite, Mommy?

怎么放风筝啊，妈妈？

Mom: I'll show you at the park.

妈妈：我到公园教你。

Putting the Kite Together 装风筝

Mom: Let's get the kite out of the package

妈妈：咱们把风筝从包装里拿出来，

and put it together.

把它装好。

We need to insert these little poles

咱们需要把这些小棍插进去，

to hold the kite together.

把风筝支起来。

Hold together指让各部分就位。

Next, attach the string that we will hold.

然后，把咱们要拉着的线安上。

We are all done!

都弄好了！

Let's head to the park.

咱们去公园吧。

At the Park 在公园里

Mom: We need to be away from the trees

妈妈：咱们得离树远点，

so the kite doesn't get stuck in the branches.

风筝才不会卡到树枝上。

如果是挂在树枝边缘，用on the branches，如果位置比较靠里，用in the branches，表达一种深陷其中的感觉。

Where do you think is a good spot to fly our kite?

你觉得哪块地方比较适合放咱们的风筝？

Child: Right here, is this okay, Mommy?

宝宝：这儿，行吗，妈妈？

Mom: Yes, it's a great spot,

妈妈：嗯，这块地方挺好的，

no trees to get in the way.

没有树挡着。

We need to face away from the wind.

咱们得背着风。

The First Try 第一次试飞

Mom: You hold the string spool

妈妈：你拿着线轴，

and I will hold up the kite

我举着风筝，

so the wind can catch it

这样风才能兜住它，

and lift it into the air.

把它升到空中。

In the air比in the sky的位置低，“在空中”是in the air，“在天上”是in the sky，即在非常高的空中。

When I let it go

我放开它的时候，

分不清let it go和let go的同学，可以试试这种记忆方法，let it go对应中文的“放开”，let go of it对应中文的“松手”。下文中有关于let go-松手的句子。

you need to run a little bit that way

你要往那边跑一跑，

to help pull the string taut.

帮助把线绷得紧紧的。

Taut比tight（紧）更强调“绷”。

Ready, here we go.

准备好了，开始。

Run!

跑啊！

Child: Oh no, Mommy, the kite fell to the ground.

妈妈：哎呀，妈妈，风筝掉到地上了。

Fall to强调朝向地面下落的“方向”，fall on强调“触击”地面。

It didn't work!

不行呀！

It must be broken.

肯定是坏了。

Mom: No, it's not broken.

妈妈：没有，没坏。

Don't worry.

别担心。

Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it to stay up.

有时候得试好几次才能放起来呢。

The Second Try 第二次试飞

Mom: Let's try again.

妈妈：咱们再试一次。

I will hold it up and then let go

我举着它，然后松手，

and you run and pull the string tight.

你负责跑和把线拉紧。

When it starts to fly

等它开始飞了，

we have to unroll more string from the spool

我们要从线轴里多放一些线，

to help it fly high up in the sky.

帮助它飞到高高的天空上。

Ready, set, go!

预备，开始！

Run!

跑！

There it goes up.

飞高了。

Let out some more string

再放点线，

so it can get higher into the sky.

让它在天上再飞高点。

Well done!

太棒了！

Child: This is so much fun, Mommy!

宝宝：太好玩了，妈妈！

It's flying!

飞起来了！

Mom: Great job!

妈妈：真棒！

Make sure to keep the line tight

一定要拉紧线，

风筝的线既可以用string，也可以用line。

or the kite will fall back down.

要不然风筝会掉下来的。

You could also repeatedly tug the string towards yourself

你还可以一下下地往回扽线，

Tug对应中文的“扽”，指把线、绳子、衣服等猛一拉，如：The baby is tugging Dad’s pant leg. 宝宝扽着爸爸的裤腿。

so the kite will climb further.

风筝还能再往高了爬。

Bringing the Kite Back 收风筝

Mom: Okay, it's time to go home now.

妈妈：好了，现在该回家了。

Let's bring the kite back in.

咱们把风筝收回来吧。

You need to start bringing the line in slowly.

要慢慢地收线。

Just pull the string down

把线往下拉，

and wrap it around the spool

然后绕在线轴上，

until the kite falls down.

直到风筝落下来。

Child: Can we do it again tomorrow?

宝宝：我们明天能再玩一次吗？

Mom: Sure, but the weather has to be kite flying weather.

妈妈：当然，但是天气得是适合放风筝的天气。

We need a little wind and no rain.

我们需要一点风，还不能有雨。

Potential Problems When Flying a Kite

放风筝时可能遇到的麻烦

(1) The string broke.

线断了。

(2) The kite is caught in the tree.

风筝挂在了树上。

同正文中关于in / on the branches的解释，如果是挂在树的边缘用on the tree，如果位置比较靠里，用in the tree。

(3) The kite is ripped.

风筝被刮破了。

(4) The string fell off the string spool.

线从线轴上脱落了。

(5) The kite is gone.

风筝不见了。
