The idea for Arbor Day came from Nebraska [nəˈbræskə] almost 130 years ago. At that time, Nebraska was not yet a state. It was territory. The land was flat and wide-open. It had almost no trees. A reporter named J.Sterling Morton moved to Nebraska. He and his wife loved nature. They planted trees and flowers around their new home. Mr. Morton became the editor of Nebraska's first newspaper. He wrote reports about agriculture and importance of trees. Trees were needed in Nebraska to prevent the wind from blowing away the soil. They also provided protection from the hot summer sun. J.Sterling Morton became an official of Nebraska territory. He proposed a tree planting holiday. The area’s Agriculture Committee organized the first Arbor Day on April 10th, 1872. Prizes were offered for the person who planted the most trees. Experts say more than 1,000,000 trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor Day.

Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. It often falls on the last Friday in April, but since planting conditions vary, it may occur from September to May.

Anyway Arbor Day is all about trees! It's a great excuse to get out and look at the trees around you, learn a little bit about them, find out what you can do to help preserve and nourish them, and even plant a tree or two or three!

Arbor Day is the time for planting new trees in yards, parks, neighborhoods, and communities. National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April, but the date of each state’s Arbor day can vary depending on the growing season.

Arbor day is also a time to appreciate trees both for their beauty and their usefulness. Talk with the children about how trees provide us with shade, food, and firewood as well as wood for making such things as paper, houses and furniture.

Arbor Day Arts and Crafts

Hand Trees

Trace around hand and arm to make a tree and trunk. Color. Or, for a neat effect, color a piece of paper with colors so it is completely filled like a sunset, then trace around hand and arm on black construction paper. Cut, and paste onto sunset.

Tree Worms

If you have the bark of a wild tree, the children love to see the shape the ringworms made on it. Then they can draw a tree and make similar shapes.

Leaf Press

The kids can gather fresh leaves and bark, press them, and let them glue them on paper in the shape of a tree. Then cover with clear contact paper, and they have their own pressed leaf tree.

The Tree Life Cycle

Show the kids how the leaves/buds of the tree look in the four seasons by making a poster. For younger kids, have trees made, and let them color the leaves green, yellow, or make buds, and leave one blank as it is in winter (some kids will color snow on it.) For older kids, they can simply draw the tree in context, associating it with the season.

All plants – from flowers to tall trees – follow similar life cycles. It starts with seeds. When the seeds have water, warmth and soil, it starts to grow inside the seed coat as a "germ(胚芽)". A stem(茎) grows up from the germ, and roots grow down from the germ. Then leaves develop on the stem, and roots grow bigger. It grow into a small tree. Several days or weeks later, flower buds(花蕾) grow. A full-grown plant has leaves, stems, flowers and roots.

春天

It's a lovely sunny day and Let's go for a walk .We can breathe some fresh air, which will make us feel refreshed.

The spring is coming and the weather is warming up.

The icy river has thawed. 解冻融化

The little animals are awakening from hibernation.

We can see tadpoles swimming in the pond!

The little trees have begun to sprout and the flowers have bloomed.

I like seeing the flowers and trees bud and bloom.

Everything is so dead looking in winter and then things start coming back to life in spring

I like the warm mild weather

I like the smells in the air, fresh cut grass, tilled earth, blooming flowers新翻的土的味道

I like being able to open up s to let fresh air in the house

I've noticed that the trees are showing signs of green, the"coming out of dormancy "green.那种结束了休眠期的绿

Lawns are greening up in spring草地慢慢绿起来

赏花

Go outside to enjoy magnolia [mæɡˈnoʊliə]blossoms and plum blossoms, but all plum blossoms fell off after yesterday night rain.

Look at all the different kinds of flowers in the field.

Dandelions have tiny yellow petals. They will turn into white seeds.

Is the rape flowers flourishing now? /ˈflʌrɪʃ/繁荣的

We can enjoy the view of rape flowers in the field.Rape flowers are in full blossom in March.

When Can You Tap Trees for Syrup?

Tree tapping happens right when winter is turning to spring. The timing can vary depending on your location, but generally tree tapping can start anywhere from late February to mid April.

The best time to tap trees is when the daily temperature consistently rises above freezing and nighttime temperature falls below freezing.

How to Choose Which Tree to Tap

SIZE:

The tree you tap needs to be at least 12 inches in diameter.
