What is a Mouse?

A mouse is a rodent啮(nie)齿类动物, which is a kind of mammal哺乳动物. It has a pointed snout口鼻部尖尖的, small rounded ears, a body-length scaly tail and a high breeding rateun有很高的繁殖率.

The best known mouse species is the common house mouse家鼠. It is also a popular大众的pet. In some places, certain kinds of field mice田鼠 are also common. They are known to invade入侵，homes for food and occasionally shelter临时的住所.

These small animals are often used in science experiments, or sometimes kept as pets. Some mice carry diseases携带疾病. This causes some people to think of mice as vermin or pests害虫. Many other people think mice are cute and fun animals.

Mice are rodents, therefore they are related to squirrels, rats, and beavers海狸.

Mice eat grains, weeds, seeds, berries, and more. However,they will eat almost anything if they get hungry enough, including their own tails.

They are eaten by owls, foxes, and cats, amongst others.

Mice are usually nocturnal animals. They have poor eyesight but make up for this with their very good hearing and smell.

A mouse or plural mice is a small mammal from the rodent order of animals.

There are more than 30 known species of mice.

The house mouse is the best known type of mouse and is a popular pet variety. Other mouse species seen in and around the house are the field mouse, the American white-footed mouse美国白脚鼠 and the deer mouse鹿鼠.

Mice tails can grow as long as their bodies.

Mice use their whiskers to sense changes in temperature and to help feel the surface they are walking along.

Mice build very complex burrows with long entrances and many escape routes. They are very clean and tidy rodents with their burrows often having separate areas for storing food, sleeping and going to the toilet.

A mouse eats 15 - 20 times a day. Therefore they usually build their homes close to food sources, tending to only travel up to 8m from their burrows to find food.

Rodents – Their Different Types 

When you think of rodents, you probably think of small animals like mice that your mom doesn’t want in the house.

But there are over 1,500 types of rodents, including woodchucks土拨鼠, porcupines [脊椎] 豪猪, muskrats麝鼠, chipmunks[脊椎] 金花鼠 and squirrels. There are more rodents than any other mammal.

Rabbits aren’t rodents. Hamsters [脊椎] 仓鼠, gerbils[脊椎] 沙鼠, mice and rats are sometimes kept as pets.

All rodents have two front teeth that keep growing every day. Rodents gnaw咬 on wood, paper and wire to keep their teeth sharp. Most rodents are small, but the capybara[脊椎] 水豚（南美无尾大水鼠）, which lives in South America, can weigh up to 115 pounds. That’s the size of a big, big dog!

Fun Facts

• Most rodents are herbivores食草动物. That means they eat plants, nuts and seeds. Some rodents are omnivores杂食动物. They eat plants and other animals like insects, frogs and birds.
• Rodents usually only live 3 to 4 years. They have many babies.
• Rodents are smart. Rats, for example, can learn tricks.
• Some rodents dig underground tunnels. Others live in trees.
• Porcupines豪猪 look a little like hedgehogs, but they are not related.

+Game1⃣️: Act it out

(Mom uses a box and make a hole in it. Make a mouse puppet to peek through the hole. Put a cat puppet near the box. Sing the song and do the actions.)

Make a mouse puppet:

1. Using a semi-circle of pink paper, we rolled it up to make a cone shape before taping the end in place.
2. Then we drew on the eyes with a black marker before using a pipe cleaner, we pushed one end through the mouse and out of its nose. We taped the other end of the pipe cleaner in place.
3. For the eyes we folded a rectangle piece of pink paper in half and then cut out the ear shape as in the picture below.
4. Then we unfolded it and glued it in place.

Mom: Let's play a game.

Mom is a mouse. You're a cat.

The bedroom will be my hole.

You're hiding here.

Mom will sing the song and do the action.

Here’s a little mouse, peeking through a whole, peek to left, peek to light, watch out!There’s a cat inside

When you hear "watch out", you can jump out and try to catch me. Ok?

(When mom says"watch out", the cat can try to catch the mouse and the mouse can run.)

Game3⃣️: Run, little Mouse

Mom: Come here. Look, we have lots of fruit in the kitchen.

Apple looks so yummy. You will be the cat, sleep here.

Mom will be the little mouse.

I want to eat the apple. When you hear "watch out", you can try to catch me, ok?

Ok.

Mom will try to steal the apple from the kitchen.

You are the cat sleeping in the kitchen.

When you hear "watch out", you can try to catch the mouse.

Two-pocket folder

Small manila envelope

What you do:

1. Print the Where's the Mouse sentences printables and story location pictures.

Laminate if possible and cut out.

Place story location pictures and "Where's the Mouse" sentences in the envelope.

Place the envelope in one pocket of the folder.

Print the activity cover sheet and glue it to the front of the folder.

Let child choose a sentence card to read and match the location picture to the sentence.

📚最喜欢猫捉老鼠的游戏，还喜欢做长长的尾巴，“妈妈，我是猫，我是猫，我来抓你啦，你的尾巴呢？”。
