Today is February 29th. It is a special day today, we called it Leap Day!

We feel sorry for people born on Feb. 29 because they have a birthday only once every 4 years.

Do you know why?

Leap day is an extra day added to our calendar every four years. we need to add a day because of the amount of time it takes the earth to travel around the sun. It takes a little more than 365 days for the earth to travel around the sun. So every four years we use that “little more" to add an extra day on February 29.if we didn't ,we would lose hours of sunlight as the year went on.

• How to Grow Mushrooms Indoors
  

Mushrooms grow quickly compared to most fruits and vegetables, and don't take up precious space in your garden.

Mushrooms are a healthy addition to any diet, as they are low in calories /ˈkælərɪ/ 卡路里 and fat, high in fiber纤维, and contain high amounts of potassium /pəˈtæsɪəm/ 钾 and selenium/sɪˈliːnɪəm/ 硒. Mushrooms are best grown indoors where the temperature and light conditions can be more readily容易的 managed. Learning how to grow mushrooms indoors is a matter of managing their growing conditions carefully.

Decide what type of mushroom we want to grow. The three types of mushrooms that are easiest to grow at home are oyster, 平菇 white ,白蘑菇 and Shiitake/ˌʃɪɪˈtɑːkeɪ/ . 香菇The method for growing each mushroom is similar, but the ideal growing substrate differs. Most hobbyists (/ˈhɒbɪɪst/ )start out with oyster mushrooms, the easiest type to grow.

Oyster mushrooms grow best in straw or coffee grounds (described later); Shiitakes grow best on hardwood阔叶树 sawdust; mushrooms grow best in composted manure /məˈnjʊə/ 肥料. These different substrates reflect the different nutritional needs of each species; however, each of these three species can be grown readily /ˈrɛdɪlɪ/ 容易的 enough in sawdust or straw.

Choosing a type of mushroom to grow is a matter of taste. You should grow the type you most want to eat.选择一种蘑菇来种植是一个口味的问题。你应该种你最想吃的那种。

1. Purchase oyster mushroom spawn. /spɔːn/ 菌丝Spawn is used by mushroom growers much like seeds are used by gardeners and farmers. It is the genetic material used to grow mushrooms.
2. Oyster mushrooms are the easiest to grow, and a great choice for novices(/ˈnɒvɪs/ A novice is someone who has been doing a job or other activity for only a short time and so is not experienced at it. 新手) .
3. Poke holes in the bag. Tie the top of the plastic bag closed. Punch holes into the sides of the bag, plus a few more in the base to allow for water drainage /ˈdreɪnɪdʒ/ . The mushrooms need ventilation空气流通 to grow quickly and reliably可靠的, or carbon dioxide build-up will prevent fruiting.
4. Choose a location with a steady temperature. Now the spawn is ready to colonize/ˈkɒləˌnaɪz/ 繁殖 the substrate /ˈsʌbstreɪt/ 基质 with mycelium /maɪˈsiːlɪəm/ 菌丝. Most strains do this best at temperatures between 60º and 75ºF (16–24ºC). Even small variations/ˌvɛərɪˈeɪʃən/ in temperature can decrease mushroom yield/jiːld/ 产量 or encourage contamination, so try to find a room that stays at this temperature 24 hours a day.
5. Mycelium can grow at any light level except direct sunlight.
6. The ideal temperature depends on the strain. If your spawn came with instructions for a growing environment, follow them.
7. Check on moisture levels over the next few weeks. It takes two to five weeks for the white, feathery /ˈfɛðərɪ/ 软而轻的 "roots" called mycelium to spread throughout the substrate. During this time, all you need to do is check on the moisture level every few days. If the substrate feels dry to the touch, mist 使有薄雾 it through the holes in the bag. If you see standing water inside the bag, poke more drainage holes in the base
8. Mycelium is white. If you see large patches of another color, mold has contaminated the bag.Throw the bag away and wipe the area down with isopropyl/ˌaɪsəʊˈprəʊpɪl/ 异丙醇 alcohol before trying again.
