There is no doubt that the Spring Festival, which is also called Chinese New Year, is the most significant traditional festival in China. In order to celebrate Chinese New Year, what do people in Guangzhou do?

In Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong, visiting the Flower Market (also known as Flower Street) of lunar New Year with family or friends is regarded as a traditional activity for Cantonese to ring out the old year and celebrate the coming year. The Chinese New Year Flower Market Fair is held on the weekend before Chinese New Year Day. The Flower Fair is the place to come to purchase fresh flowers, fruits, candies and brand new supplies for the home to begin the new lunar year.

History of Flower Fair

The origin of flower fair, as a traditional folk culture of Guangzhou, can be traced back to 500 years ago to Ming Dynasty. And the forming of Guangzhou flower market is closely connected with the climate, history and culture of Guangzhou.

Located in the subtropical zone where the climate is warm and humid, the city of Guangzhou is well-known as “the city of flowers”. Guangzhou is a historic city of China with more than 2200 years of history. As the birthplace of Marian Silk Road, the transportation of Guangzhou is quite developed, making Guangzhou a huge market with large demand of flowers. And the formation of the Guangzhou flower market can trace back to Ming Dynasty when Four Markets of Guangdong were gradually formed: Medicine Market of Luofushan, Incense Market of Dongguan, Flower Market of Guangzhou and Pearl Market of Lianzhou. The flower market, especially, is the largest and most influential one, which was also held in the evening and had relatively fixed position.
