塞尚是西方现代艺术之父。曾经毕加索、马蒂斯这样讲过；塞尚是他们所有人的父亲。塞尚对于“绘画的任务是什么”的理解和思考深刻地影响了一代又一代的后人；如毕加索、马蒂斯等。到了米罗这样的大师，还有后来的波罗克、罗斯科就不会再去画一些具体的东西了，他们纯粹在构造一个画面；为了画面的和谐美，为了自己的艺术理念而对客观事物进行改造、扭曲，从而达到永恒。这是现代社会对于绘画的任务是什么的从新思考，对于现代人的审美重新定义，也是艺术家以新的方式表现新的审美视角。
