The Qixi Festival, also known as the Qiqiao Festival, is a Chinese festival celebrating the annual meeting of the cowherd and weaver girl in mythology. It falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month on the Chinese calendar.

Qixi Festival 2019 is August 7, 2019. It takes place every year between July 31 and August 29.

Qiqiao Festival, is the most romantic of all traditional Chinese holidays. It’s a time to celebrate star-crossed lovers with grand romantic gestures浪漫之举, boxes of chocolates and longing for true love.

In days gone by, the Qixi Festival was an occasion for girls to demonstrate the domestic skills necessary for marriage. 

The Qixi Festival is born from a tale of star-crossed lovers. So the story goes, the holiday originates from the forbidden romance of the goddess Zhinu and the humble farm boy Niulang. Separated in the night sky by the Milky Way, the two lovers are allowed to meet only once a year across a bridge of magpies on the evening of the Qixi Festival.

In the ancient Chinese legend.when a beautiful weaver girl, Zhi Nv,was actually a goddess,went out to play in the human realm and met a human cow boy called Niu Lang,and fell in love.Zhinü decided to settle down on earth and lead an ordinary life with Niulang.They married and had two kids.

However love between ordinary people and fairy God is forbiden. The Queen mother-in-law was so pissed that Zhi Nv married a human.They were punished , and turn into stars located down the opposite side of the Milky Way watching each other from the impossible distance. There was no Milky Way before.But the queen mother-in-law scratch a wide river in the sky with a hairpin,and separated the two stars Altair, which is Niu Lang and Vega, which is Zhi Nv.

Zhi Nv is separated forever on one side of the river weaving her loom,while Niu Lang watches her from afar,while taking their two children.

The two was so sad. They cry continuously.

The magpies in the sky pity them so much that they form a bridge once a year.

So the star-crossed lovers can see each other.

They are permitted to meet each other only on the 7th day of the 7th month each year. Magpies gather and make a bridge across the Galaxy for them.

These days, the holiday has gone the way of the Western Valentine’s Day, a largely commercial opportunity for couples to buy chocolates, flowers and other gifts.The Qixi Festival is ultimately about celebrating true love, so it’s difficult to argue with romantic gestures. Home cooked meals, gifts and romantic movies always win, just don’t forget Niulang and Zhinu as you settle in.

Niulang and Zhinu became the stars, Altair and Vega, which come closest together on the Qixi Festival. Altair is the middle of three stars to the east of the Milky Way. Vega is in a cluster of six just to the west.

The Star of Vega is relatively close to us, at only 25 light years and subsequently it is the 5th brightest star visible from Earth. Vega lies within the constellation of Lyra which is said to be the harp played by the legendary Greek musician Orpheus.

Marine turtles are adapted for life in an aquatic environment. They have evolved so that their legs have become flippers which help them move more efficiently in the water. You can tell a lot about a turtle by observing how they are built.

There are 5 species of marine turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. Each species is unique. One species of marine turtle grows up to 8 feet in length. Other species of turtles have specialized beaks designed for feeding on various types of marine animals.

Marine turtles are nearly 100% aquatic animals. They have paddle-like limbs which are designed for swimming quickly through the water. Their bodies are streamlined to reduce drag while moving through the water. This adaptation is known as hydrodynamics. Paddle-like flippers and a hydrodynamic body allow sea turtles to be successful in evading predators like sharks.

The head, flippers and neck are covered in scales. Marine turtles do not have teeth. Their beaks have evolved with sharp cutting edges for tearing or crushing the various types of food they eat.

A sea turtle’s shell or carapace is very thick and hard. It is made of fused ribs and a thin outer layer that is made out of the same material as your fingernail (keratin). The carapace protects the turtle’s internal organs. It is visually divided into many sections which are called scutes. Scientists learn to identify individual species based on the shape and number of these scutes.

The underside or belly of a sea turtle is called the plastron. It is not as solid and connected as the carapace, but it also serves to protect the internal organs. The pale color of the plastron serves as camouflage when viewed from below by predators (this is called 'counter-shading').

Procedures

1. Collect your materials.

2. Face one plate bottom up, this will be your turtle’s shell or carapace. On this plate draw a design or color it to match one of the eight marine turtles found in the world’s oceans.

3. Copy or trace the pattern provided on construction or cardstock paper.

4. Cut out the body parts.

5. Arrange your shapes so that the head is located between the two longest flippers. The smaller flippers belong on opposite sides at the other end of the plate.

6. Glue your pieces to the inside of either one of your paper plates.

7. Apply glue to the rim of your plate and attach both plates facing each other, bottoms out.
