Background information:

My name is Lauren Tininenko, I have lived in Shanghai for almost 3 years, I’m 25 years old, and I started swimming when I was 5 years old. I began a swim team for chinese and foreigners in Shanghai, called the Shanghai Xiaolongxia I swam the Qiongzhou Strait last December.

So many of my American friends couldn’t believe that I’d take on a challenge like this while I was living in China. They asked, “Won’t it be harder to train for this swim in China? In the USA, many swimmers are training for this and you could swim with them.”

I agree that maybe it would be easier to train in the USA where I’m familiar with where to swim and I know who to talk to for advice about training. However, training for the Channel was so much more rewarding.

Every time I reached out to someone in the swimming community in China, they were more than happy to help me with questions that I had, or connect me with someone who could help me. I’ve never felt more taken care of than I did by local swimmers in China. Immediately I was put in touch with 陈苏伟 and 王平川. One who was the third Chinese person to ever complete the channel swim and the other who hopes to complete it next month and be the 4th chinese person. They were both so helpful to me.

Then for training, I would meet a swimmer in an area that was ideal for swim training, and they were so excited to help host me and help me plan training for when I would be there. This also meant the whole team would come out to swim with me, which I love. I would always prefer to be surrounded by swimmers rather than training alone, and I met so many amazing people along this way, and that’s the part I’m most thankful for about this entire journey.

I hope I can inspire people through this swim. It was incredible to see how many people were cheering for me, and also for the first relay of Chinese Women who succeeded in their crossing, and I hope that more men and women will keep rising up to the challenge.

Before the swim:

I waited in Dover for many days. My for the swim started on June 22 and ended on June 30. A few times, my boat pilot said I would swim the next day, and then it got canceled for bad weather. I was starting to get worried that I wouldn’t get to swim at all because my of time was going to end. Finally, on June 28th at night, my pilot, Eddie, said “We will make the call at 6 am tomorrow. If the weather is good, we meet at 8 am.”

I went to sleep not knowing if I was going to swim the next day.

The swim:

The next morning at 6 am, Eddie texted and said, “We’re going. See you at 8.” I screamed and woke up my family, as my dad and sister were on my boat crew. We packed up our things and headed to the boat.

I put my grease and sunscreen on, and suddenly it was time to start. I jumped off the boat into the water. The water was about 15 degrees Celsius at the start, but it didn’t feel very cold because the sun was out, and that felt warm.

I felt so great in the water, and I was enjoying the swim so much. The water was so clear and blue. Time passed quickly because I was dodging jellyfish and watching what people were doing on the boat. My feeds were every 30 minutes, and those 30 minutes seemed to pass quickly. I realized that I had no idea if I had been swimming for 3 hours or 6 hours. I was just swimming cluelessly, but I still felt very strong. I was told not to look up because France often looks very close even when you’re very far away, so I tried not to. I could tell that it seemed like I was getting close.

I stopped for a feed and my crew told me that I was close to the end, but they said the currents in France will push me off course if I don’t pick up the pace. So even though I’d been giving my best effort for ten hours, I’d have to go faster now or else I would get blown off course by the currents and need to swim more. It was so hard, but I tried so hard to go faster. I knew that this was the end so I used everything I had left, and finally, I looked up and I was so close to France. The boat with me can’t go into the shallow waters so a little boat came off the back and escorted me into France. Finally, I finished the swim on a small strip of land that was a ramp down into the water. I cried because I was so happy that I actually made it. Part of me doubted that I would ever make it this far, so I was so happy to prove myself wrong.

My dad and sister were on the boat. Mom stayed in Dover because she didn’t want to see me

suffer

The swim summary:

On June 29, I completed a solo swim across the English Channel. The total swim was 43.5 kilometers, and my total time was 11 hours and 15 minutes.
