A: Sweetheart, do you know why you don't have to go to school today？We have another traditional holiday-the Dragon Boat Festival. This is a very special Chinese holiday.

B: When is it?

A: On the Chinese calendar, dragon boat festival is on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It's celebrated not only in China but also by Chinese people all over the world.

Dragon Boat Festival, on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, has had a history of more than 2,000 years. Dragon Boat Festival 2019 falls on June 7（Friday ). China will have 3 days of holiday from Friday (June 7) to Sunday( June 9), and we will be back at work on Monday , June 10.

A: OK. The Dragon Boat Festival is a way to commemorate (/kəˈmɛməˌreɪt/ To commemorate an important event or person means to remember them by means of a special action, ceremony, or specially created object. 纪念)a great ancient poet named Quyuan./ It honors a poet from ancient China. His name is Quyuan. He couldn't bear the anguish (anguish /ˈæŋɡwɪʃ/ Anguish is great mental suffering or physical pain. 极度痛苦)when his motherland was invaded. (/ɪnˈveɪd/ To invade a country means to enter it by force with an army. 侵入)So he drown himself in the river.不能忍受祖国受到侵犯

B: Why do people eat zongzi on that day?

A: In order to prevent the fish from eating the poet's body.Local people dropped zongzi into the river for the fish to eat. so they will not eat Quyuan's body .Every year we eat zongzi.

粽子

One of the most interesting facts about the festival is a variety of recipes for making "Zongzi",the stuffed rice dumplings wrapped in reed leaves.

Zongzi is a fundamental /ˌfʌndəˈmɛntəl/ 基本的part of the Dragon Boat Festival and a delicious snack enjoyed by people even today.

粽子是端午节的一个基本部分，即使在今天，也是一种人们喜爱的美味可口的小吃。

It's said that the local people use zongzi to throw into the water in a bid to 为了stop the fish feeding on Qu Yuan body.

Rinse the glutinous rice a few times under running water until the water is clear.Soak the glutinous rice in water overnight (or at least four hours).

2. 滤掉水分，糯米备用。

Drain the water away and set aside for wrapping the zongzi.

3.Now it comes to the most challenging and exciting part- wrapping the zongzi.

Pick two pieces of leaves, smooth side up. Place the smaller one on top of the large piece.

4. 用两只手将叶子叠成锥形，不要留缝隙. 

Fold the leaves with both hands to shape like a funnel, without leaving an opening at the bottom.

端午节戴什么？端午节最有特色的饰物就是香包(sachet)。小孩佩戴香包，传说有避邪驱瘟之意。/ˈsæʃeɪ/ 

On Dragon Boat Festival, parents also need to dress their children up with a perfume pouch. They first sew little bags with colorful silk cloth, then fill the bags with perfumes or herbal （/ˈhɜːbəl/ Herbal means made from or using herbs. 香草的; 使用药草的）medicines, and finally string them with silk threads. The perfume pouch will be hung around the neck or tied to the front of a garment （/ˈɡɑːmənt/ A garment is a piece of clothing）as an ornament. They are said to be able to ward off evil.（To ward off a danger or illness means to prevent it from affecting you or harming you. 阻挡 (危险、疾病等)）

在端午节，父母也会为孩子们佩戴香囊。他们首先用色彩鲜艳的丝布缝一个小袋子，然后在里面装上香料或者草药，最后用丝线串起来。香囊通常挂在脖子上，或是作为一种饰品系在衣服前面。相传它们有避邪驱瘟的功效。

拴五色丝线 Tying five-color silk thread

端午节，大人在孩子手腕（wrist）、脚腕（ankle）、脖子（neck）上拴五色线。系线时，禁忌儿童开口说话。五色线不可任意折断或丢弃，只能在夏季第一场大雨或第一次洗澡时，抛到河里。

端午节挂什么？

悬艾叶菖蒲 Hanging mugwort/ˈmʌɡˌwɜːt/ 艾草 or calamus/ˈkæləməs/ 

民谚说："清明插柳，端午插艾"。在端午节，家家都洒扫庭除，以菖蒲、艾条插于门眉，悬于堂中。

钟馗捉鬼，是端午节习俗，在江淮地区，家家悬钟馗像，用以镇宅驱邪。
