Ancient India’s yoga gurus had a profound study of breathing. They lay great emphasis on breathing techniques, with a saying that goes: “if your breath 11 times per minute, you shall understand the languages of birds and beasts; if you breath 9 times per minute, you shall understand the language the earth is speaking; if you breath 7 times per minute, you will know everything that is worthy of knowing in all beings.”
As an ancient natural agent, lacquer has a life cycle to itself: the polymerisation and solidification speeds of the sap excreted from the tree trunks of the lacquer tree vary, just like breathing can be fast or slow. It also changes according to changes of temperature and humidity. After being completely cured, it starts to demonstrate excellent physical properties and rich visual characteristics. Therefore, our ancestors used lacquer in their worships of ancestors, interments, rituals, paintings and everyday utensils. Lacquer became a link that runs through the entire Chinese civilisation.
Having worked with lacquer for 11 years, I have always been thinking: how can lacquer acquire its own voice and a refreshed reception in the context of today’s art? Years of experience from Vipassana and yoga practice in India provide me with a different perspective to examine the relationship between lacquer and art. How to validate lacquer in the context of contemporary art? How are feelings communicated?
This is a sharing event about the art of lacquer.
