Teaching methodoly—eliciting & concept checking

Why do we teachers need to elicit?

That’s because what we teach are not always brand-new information. We can elicit from what students already knew most of the time! No matter how well prepared we are, please don’t do the talking all the time! Students may easily get bored and also easy to forget what you said.Try to get them involved in the class,Try to make them think so it’s easier for them to remember.

How to elicit?

Teachers can begin eliciting by asking questions about a picture. Make sure the answers expected from the students are relevant to what we want to teach them. So it is demanding for us to design helpful questions. And we need to give proper feedback to students’ answer. I think once again it requires carful preparation. Or we can just be a watcher or co/operator when we are asking students to elicit from each other. We can know clearly how they are going by observing their collaboration.

There are 11 amazing ways Nancy mentioned for eliciting. I am familiar with some of them and I do have used some of them in my class. But I do need to try to practice several of the ways such as: lexical set or cline! They are both challenging!

In class two,Nancy put forward another teaching technique: Concept checking. That is to say how we can know students have understood what are taught to them. For example, we can ask some good questions to check whether students have already understood what we taught. So it’s called CCQS!

Making a timeline is so helpful after we teach verb tenses!

Interesting and effective ways to check whether students have grasped the correct language requirements for Subjunctive Mood! I love it so much! So impressive class!

So wonderful questions for me to answer! I’d like to talk about them because they are closely connected with me or my life! We had a heated classroom presentation!

Lovely Nancy! I like seeing her just sitting on the table and communicating with us in class! You know it’s thought impossible or improper in China!

Nancy also prepared a song and a short video for us to practice Subjunctive Mood. I must say the activities are natural made and related to the topic! They just help the class progress further and deeper! All in all I love her way of teaching!

Beautiful school and wonderful day! So rich and colorful! I am enjoying being a student here!
